‘KC’ Win in Sunshine Band Authorship Fight Appealed to Justices

KC and the Sunshine Band co-founder and ex-bassist Richard Finch asked the US Supreme Court to revive his bid to claim a share of 99 of the band’s song copyrights.

Finch’s petition argued that lower courts wrongly found he waited too long to sue upon learning co-founder Harry Wayne Casey claimed he fully owned the band’s catalog. Finch hopes to exercise termination rights and reclaim copyrights he signed away in 1983.

His petition, docketed Oct. 25, suggests the high court “consider this petition in tandem with” a case the court recently agreed to hear that also involves a copyright statute ...
