About the Author

S.B. Divya is the author of the Nebula nominated novella, RUNTIME (Tor.com, 2016) and has published short fiction in Analog and Uncanny. She is co-editor of the Hugo nominated weekly science-fiction podcast, Escape Pod, with Mur Lafferty. She holds degrees in Computational Neuroscience and Signal Processing, and has worked for 20 years as an electrical engineer.

Mur Lafferty is a writer, podcast producer, gamer, geek, and martial artist. She is the host of the award winning podcast I Should Be Writing, and the host of the Angry Robot Books Podcast. Beth Cato hails from Hanford, California, but currently writes and bakes cookies in a lair west of Phoenix, Arizona. She’s the Nebula Award-nominated author of A THOUSAND RECIPES FOR REVENGE from 47North (summer 2023), plus the Clockwork Dagger duology and the Blood of Earth trilogy from Harper Voyager. Her short stories can be found in publications ranging from Beneath Ceaseless Skies to Uncanny Magazine. In 2019, she won the Rhysling Award for short speculative poetry.

Entertaining SF Stories by an All-Star Lineup of Authors

Second Disclaimer: I have been enjoying Escape Pod since its first year, so I am not an impartial reviewer.

There are so many positive things I can say about "Escape Pod: The Science Fiction Anthology". Let me start by mentioning that Escape Pod is one of the first podcasts that I subscribed to back around 2006 to make my commute more enjoyable. I find the selection of thought provoking science fiction stories and excellent narration in Escape Pod to remind me of my favorite radio show, Mind Webs from WHA Radio in Madison, Wisconsin. If I had to limit myself to a single podcast, it would be Escape Pod.

Next, the All-Star lineup of authors is fantastic. Ten of the 15 authors are multiple winners of prestigious awards such as Hugo, Campbell, Locus, Nebula, Parsec, and others. And most of the remaining authors have been nominated for these awards. Nine of the 15 authors have instant name recognition to me as I enjoyed their novels that they are on my "I will read anything they write" list. Since I believe that other science fiction fans may feel the same way, let me list their names: Kameron Hurley, Tim Pratt, Ken Liu, Sarah Galley, Mur Lafferty, John Scalzi, Mary Robinette Kowal, Cory Doctorow, and N.K. Jemisin. And the remaining authors, T. Kingfisher, Beth Cato, Maurice Broaddus, Tobias Buckell, Greg van Eekhout, and Tina Connolly are on the fast track to becoming my newest favorite authors because their stories vividly came to life for me, in some cases even more than the author's I already knew.

Next, the selection of short stories themselves was fantastic. Well written short stories instantly grab the readers attention and do not let go until the end. These are all well written short stories. These stories have everything from a recent college grad learning that she is actually a princess from a parallel universe, galactic communication enabled by the Sun's gravitational lens, travelers who send their mind via telecommunication to be recreated as clones at their destination, previously unknown "supernatural" creatures migrating from Earth to space stations, generation ships, steampunk as Dickens would have written, extra-solar colonies, and much more.

This was a wonderful anthology. I can't wait to read the next one!

There are a lot of good stories in here. Personally, I don't care about being woke, LGBTQ-whatever, etc. I care about good stories and good writing. And there are quite a few gems in here. Definitely some authors whose works I'll look up later on. *That's* the mark of a good anthology, in my opinion.

Enjoyable Stories by top writers in the field!

I’m beginning to think I like anthologies.

I know Mur Lafferty from Six Wakes, her locked room clone murder mystery inspired by one of my favorite video games. So I was excited to see she had co-edited an anthology. I didn’t realize it was based on Escape Pod, her fiction podcast! This is chock full of excellent stores by many of the biggest names in SFF, from John Scalzi to Mary Robinette Kowal. I especially liked Kameron Hurley’s short story about time travelers trying to fix a future they no longer remember. N. K. Jemisin’s story felt more cute than good to me - I think I prefer her works long form when they have a chance to breathe. But that is the beauty of an anthology like this one - if a story isn’t to your taste, another one will be along in a few pages!

Stories for the Sci-Fi Lover Looking for Quick Reads

This anthology contains stories by accomplished authors. It was put together by Serah Eley, one of the founders of Escape Pod, a Sci-Fi podcast website. It contains stories by Ken Liu, John Scalzi, Ursula Vernon, and 13 other authors who were new to me. The stories address LGBT rights, government control, and race issues, all based in a futuristic environment. Each story takes about 20 to 30 minutes to read making the book perfectly suited for daily commutes or a distraction from daily workout drudgery. The longest part of the book was the coming-out foreword written by Serah Eley.

Some of the stories regarding human rights issues overtly address them whereas others are more subtle. None were rants! All titled entries contain storylines that kept my interest with one ending suddenly; before the story had fully developed. I like short story anthologies for those times when I have no choice but to sit and wait. Waiting is something that I don’t do well. I’ll read articles in waiting room periodicals and newspaper about subjects in which I have no interest. Or I’ll put in my earbuds for podcasts listening, although I sometimes think that this is rude. It gives notice to anyone near me that I don’t want to talk to them. Whilst that may true, it’s not what I want to portray.

If you’re a Sci-Fi lover who’s looking for a quick read, Escape Pod: The Science Fiction Anthology will meet that requirement and the stories give you something to ponder when you’re through.

Amazingly uninspired

Yes, some of the stories are contaminated with wokeness, but it's not as severe as I expected given the book's foreword. The problem is rather that the entries in this collection are mostly pointless, and by that I mean that they are stories that don't entertain and end up going nowhere. It's almost as if the editors sought out selections that lacked conclusions. Not at all satisfying.

I love the amazing variety in this anthology. Near future, far future, steampunk, aliens, colony ships, tigers, the big, the small, this has it all.

The only thing I didn't like about this anthology of that I had already heard more than half of the stories listening to the Escape Pod podcast.
