What are the SHF’s thoughts on Daltrey's new orchestral version?

Only listened once but quite enjoyed it. Powerful enough. It’s completely different to the Who’s storming live version. Can’t imagine i’ll Play it a lot though. Daltrey is in good voice though and superb musicians. I think it’s Scott Devours on drums and he’s on powerful form.

My theory is that Roger took command of The Who in 2000 and it’s his vision now. He could continue some kind of legacy if Pete wasn’t around.

    Long Live Rock!

Roger ain’t going anywhere without Pete’s songs. The Who will always be Pete Townshend band with Roger mainly a vehicle for Pete’s music. (IMHO).

Rog will always use Pete’s songs but he no longer needs Pete to do em. The Who are his band now. Pete has told us enough times that he “hates” The Who and Rock. Roger on the other hand loves both.

How did this release get past me? I knew about it when it was announced but I totally forgot about it (I guess I was looking too much forward towards Springsteen's and Madonna's new releases.)

I doubt I will see this release at Target. Maybe FYE? I will check both places this week and if I can't find it, I will just have to order it from Amazon.

Do you have a Barnes & Noble nearby? That’s where I bought mine.

I almost forgot almost this one. I'm giving it a stream now. It would have to nudge a bunch of Who versions aside to see regular play.

So while I would have to file this one under "unnecessary", for what it is, it's really good, IMO! Roger sounds terrific, and the editing between songs is very tight to really keep things humming along. I thought there was a nice blend between the band and the orchestra when I saw the show in Nashville, and I'm left with the same impression listening to the album. I also can't help but be reminded of how great the source material is. The disturbing material has only grown more disturbing as I've gotten older, and I mean that in the best possible way. Roger's "I saw it ..." etc., which is much more at the fore here than in a Who recording, packs an emotional wallop.

I haven't heard it... yet. But Daltrey is one of my favorite singers, and has never come across as a bad dude.

From reading his autobiography he does seem like a regular guy, with a 40 plus year marriage and 8 kids, 3 of which are directly attributable to the rock and roll lifestyle. To his credit he’s done right by them.

  14. I like it a lot actually. Musically it sounds the closest to the original album. I like hearing Roger sing the songs the other members sing on the original album. "Tommy's Holiday Camp" made me smile.

Yeah, I take your point, but they will always be Pete’s songs.

The orchestra on the album is NOT the orchestra that played the show on the album. A new orchestra was recorded and dubbed over the live “Who Band” performance.

Really? What’s the source for that info? Sounds like a bit of a cheat if true.

    Nope, and not gonna.

The Who did what they did when they did it, and if Roger Daltrey don't have enough saved up to live in retirement, that ain't none o' my fault.

I absolutely love the original Tommy as well a lot of the live versions of it that have been released over the years.

However, this has the appearance of a deceased equine being beaten into a fine paste.

I bought this as an afterthought Friday when I got the new Springsteen
and I must say it was a rather pleasant surprise. I've played it a number
of times. Makes me wish I had seen the concert. But then I can't get
    enough of any `Tommy'.

I saw Daltrey perform Tommy when he toured in 2011 or so and it was a fun show. The band was essentially made up of the same musicians now touring with the Who.
