Whitman Internship Grant
At Whitman, we know that learning isn't confined to the classroom. Opportunities to gain knowledge and skills are all around us! The Whitman Internship Grant provides funding for students to participate in unpaid internship experiences at nonprofit, some for-profit, and government organizations during the school year, Fall or Spring semester, and during the summer.

I love the attention professors give to students, it’s easy to access profs and most give very generous office hours and amazing feedback! Especially in the Psych and Bio department (i’m a neuroscience major), professors are awesome, and i’m super grateful for the attention to detail and passion they have for what they do. Housing is good with lots of options, but college could do better in terms of ResLife training and also food. Dining food quality is very inconsistent but definitely better than some colleges in terms of quality and also variety (have lots of vegan options). They could do better at making it more affordable and providing more veggie options (most dishes you have to pay a lot more just to add veggies in the side).
Whitman brings together amazing and interesting people from around the country/world. The top words I'd use would be friendly, open, and kind. We're a tight knit community.
The academics are top-notch. Classes tend to be seminar style and discussion based. Usually significant readings and a few essays a semester per class---not busy work. Since we have a smaller class size, I tend to think people are more intentional and invested in the kinds of things they do. Very academically focused. A few generalization are probably accurate, like that Whitman students lean artsy and tend to be environmentalist types. The interest houses are a super special place---I lived in the French House (a beautiful historic home right on campus) and found fantastic friends there. Plus, Walla Walla is the perfect size and walkable.
There's no pressure to party, though there are at least 2-4 large parties each weekend. I tend to enjoy more casual kick backs and I've found great people who like the same.

I have made some really good friends here at Whitman, but it took me over a year to find them. My biggest concern (and I do have more that I will not mention) is the lack of support I see for people like me with a need for different learning styles and accommodations. I’ve had too many professors not follow my accommodations I’m legally entitled to. Many of the classes are stuck in an old way of teaching and grading that is super discouraging and counterproductive. Some classes encourage curiosity, while others don’t. It’s super hard for someone like me that is hardworking to not feel like I’m seen or represented by grades I get (in the STEM department). Walla Walla is super isolating as well and in the Winter I always get hit with a major wave of depression. The school isn’t diverse as it claims and faculty will cover up problems that happen on campus to protect their reputation. I feel like Whitman has put out a light in me that I am struggling to get back.
