Editorial Reviews

Consistenly linked to the biggest box office blockbusters John Williams is the most popular & successful movie composer of our time. Aptly titled Greatest Hits 1969-1999 is a celebration of John's career. Music from Star Wars, E.T., Superman, Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom, Jaws, Sugarland Express, Olympic Fanfare, Return of the Jedi, the Reivers, the Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade, Empire of the Sun, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I was expecting some wear and tear on the case but there was none

In the past when I went to movies, I rarely thought about the music unless it was a popular song that was being played. I never realized how much the score had to do with the overall effect I felt while watching the show.

Once I started paying attention to the music and identifying different pieces that I enjoyed from different movies, I was suprized to realize that John Williams had composed many, many of them.

This CD contains possibably the greatest most timeless music I have heard. Sure, you, like my classical music loving boss, have probably already written off my opinion as foolish or ignorant. Honestly, I don't care.

I like Mozart, Bach and the rest, and they have their place, but their music doesn't move through me like Williams. While this collection is far from a box set of his work, all the most popular pieces are there: Raders March (Indiana Jones), Star Wars, Superman, Empire March (Darth Vader). None of the operas or preludes the other guys made up generate the experience I get from listening to the opening stanza of Superman.

While it is very hard to sing along to these pieces, if you have an office as I do, it makes great background music. Everyone who comes in is pleasently caught off guard and I enjoy watching them trying to place the various songs that are playing.

Even if you disagree that Williams is better than Wagner or Debussy, if you enjoy his music, you will love this CD. "These are the droids you are looking for."

This CD has some of the greatest tracks to classic movies over the past 45-years. This makes sense considering John Williams compose and conducted them with some of the world's leading orchestras. The tracks of this album plays & sounds as good as if the were on the original soundtracks. That's because, "all the sessions were conducted by the composer himself. The Boston Pops, Tanglewood, and Boston, Pittsburgh, London, and even the Skywalker Symphony Orchestras all lent their talents to this album." The sound proves it,: you feel and remember movie scenes as the orchestras play each track, Among my favorites are Indiana Jones theme, Superman, and Duel Of The Fates. "Such intergalactic talent makes for a thrilling ride through film music history." However, the ones that strike you emotionally are; Saving Private Ryan: Hymn To The Fallen and Schindler's List: Theme. 1941 is also funny, though ironically, the movie wasn't, Still, John Williams helps put the wonder into the music of Sci-fi and adventure movies.
On a side note, I think Williams also composed the theme to the 60's TV show: Lost in Space. Pity they couldn't add that to the CD, but with 28 tracks, this is a excellent buy!

Most of John Williams best film scores are here with accurate recordings by the Boston pops and others

The music of John Williams is truly inspirational and moving. His music adds another dimension to movies, giving it that background of soul and heart. During ET, as the spaceship lifts from the ground at the end, we hear that swell of instruments and the final chords, and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. In others such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones, we hear the adventure. In Close Encounters we hear the mystery. In Schindler's List we hear the pain and suffering of the Jews. If you haven't caught on, I'll just simply state that his music is amazing. This CD comprises his best, and in my opinion, he is the best there ever is, and ever will be. As someone once said to me, "Hans Zimmer is a musician. John Williams is a musical genius!" Truer words were never said.

John Williams is perfect. His music is always spellbinding and every soundtrack is different and really suits the film. I have all of his music ....even those from' way back' when. (He did the theme music to Checkmate, a show from the early l960's.) Even then, he was at the top of his game. One of my all time favorite pieces from this CD is Flight to Neverland from Hook. I truly think a skater could win the Olympics skating to this music.

A solid collection of John William's most recognised pieces and a nice break from other styles of music,I am very much a novice when it comes to composers, but these are some of the most known iconic film soundtracks on a cd that I own, very much recommended to lovers of instrumentals and movie soundtracks.5/5 stars.
