- CponMunich, Germany4 contributionsGreat experience, a must if you are around! :)Is the third time in 10 years I did this tour and every time I was very impressed. The laser show on the water is the cherry on the torte - always gave me goose skin. And the 2 slides were the delight for our 5 years old daughter and a bit of adrenaline for the parents :) Really nice experience!Visited May 2023Written May 22, 2023
- Aleida1004Foster City, California94 contributionsInteresting tour of salt minesThis was a fun excursion. However beware that if you are coming from Munich you will enter Austria and have to obtain a vignette car toll sticker or you will be fined. We had no clue that we were entering Austria when we were coming from Munich since we had no plans to leave Germany. Google did not warn us and right as we exited we were stopped and fined. The Salt Mines were fun but turned out pricey due to the unexpected fine. The audio tour was good and the store was very interesting with lots of small souvenir items such as Salt Mine Gin and salts.Visited June 2023Written June 20, 2023
- Lisa-Claire G3 contributionsA highlight of my tripThe entire experience was fantastic. The guide was helpful for those that weren't German, we had audio assistance to hear what was being said and the tour was interesting. The little train ride was fun, and the slides down to the next level added a totally different aspect to the experience. Even a little ferry ride on the mirror lake. Definitely worth the visit!Visited August 2023Written August 23, 2023
- Praetorian930Montreal, Canada14 contributionsBerchtesgaden in family with TEENS !!Very interresting tour (about 2 hours) and beautiful site. Right in the middle of the Bavarian Alps, scenery is spectacular. Tour is very fun, they provide a complete overall, you get a tour of the mines, tools used. Visited last July with 2 teens (15 and 17 years old) and they LOVED it. The train ride, the slides, the tranquility inside the mine. Even the restaurant on the side has delicious meals and affordable prices. I highly reccommend itVisited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 20, 2023
- elawson628 contributionsPreorder your tickets. The lines get long but it was my kids' favorite thing we didThey give two or three German tours and then do one in English. Which is great but if you're expecting to take the 12:15 tour and want it in English, you probably aren't getting on for another half hour or even 45 minutes. Then the tour takes another hour. So take that into account. We missed a boat ride by 10 minutes because of this (luckily, I hadn't prepaid for that one so we weren't out any money! The tour is fun and informative. I learned a lot about salt mining and we had some fun slides and a boat ride. It was my kids' favorite part of our Germany/Austria vacation!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 5, 2024
- nicklT6280IV17 contributionsFun filled time with family and friendsFirst time to visit a salt mine . Very cool. Both mentally and physically. Extremely hot there this past September so, a ride deep into the earth's core was the perfect fix . The history of the mine was fascinating. The docent was very articulate and easy to understand. The light show was amazing. Berchtesgaden itself is a town to behold . Highly recommend a visit . Will go back.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 30, 2024
- Nick S6 contributionsFun, Exciting and EducationalA fun, exciting, and amazing experience for the entire family. This was my 2nd visit (the last one was 14 years ago), and I was very glad that we re-visited! This is a must see and do adventure!! - Jana JJZell am See, Austria6 contributionsInteresting tourPlease consider that this is a guided tour and there are only some 60 places per time slot. You should definitely buy tickets in advance and come at least 20 mins earlier, as there's a short walk from parking lot to the entrance and you need extra time to pick up and put on the suit. This is a real mine, not some adventure park, so if you are claustrophobic or anxious about going deep into the earth, just skip it! Our kids (and we as well) found the train ride and the slides exciting and the mirror lake just stunning. The tour was very informative and interesting and our guide Steffi very funny! We loved it! The only thing I don't like is that you are not allowed to take photos, but have to buy official photos if you want to have some memories...Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 21, 2024

We booked the last timeslot of the day (3pm) and the guide, while pleasant-mannered, clearly rushed through the tour and skipped many aspects. Our tour barely lasted 45 minutes when the usual tour should last 1.5-2 hours. When we got back to the ticket office, it was clear why this happened because all the staff were packing up to leave and locking up around us. They were curt and showed their unhappiness when it took some time for us to leave because we needed to use the washroom.
If you don’t intend to keep the place open long enough to do the full tour and allow paying visitors to change out, then just scrap the last timeslot altogether instead of providing such half-hearted service just to earn money. The tour isn’t cheap either. Disappointing experience.

We were a little sceptical at first as there was a mob of people waiting to get in, the doors had not yet opened by nearly 11am and the price was quite high. However once we had done the tour we found it to be really interesting and fun. Two slides, lots of exhibits, two train rides and a boat ride made it fun for any age. Our only slight disappointment is we missed out on a fair amount of info/questions/fun facts by doing the English audio tour instead of being able to understand the German live version.

The tour was overcrowded and things talked about most often could not be seen because there were too many people on the tour. Recorders for English visitors did not work all the time, and not all information given by the tour guide in German was translated; only the recorded information played over a speaker was translated. Tour NOT very informative; tour-guide appeared rushed and not engaged. There was no question session either afterwards either, and all in all, it appeared like a rushed mass-production. In addition, 2 people out of our group of had splinters in their hands from riding on the wooden slides.

We visited from Salzburg for the morning. The tour was quite full, probably 35 or so people. Only 6 or us spoke English so we had an audioguide. The tell you not to push any buttons but sometimes it didn't automatically start when the guide pressed the remote so we figured out that you can make it play manually by pressing the appropriate number. We found the tour interesting.

My 22 year-old son and I visited and it was a nice afternoon outing. Masks were not required which was nice, although, head’s up - you are super close to people on the train and in the lift. The tour was interesting and relaxing. We bought the scan and go tickets and that saved us quite a bit of time. We put on miner suits which helped keep us warm since it’s chilly inside the mine. The only thing I didn’t like was the lights on the lake. It seemed very out of place and definitely unnecessary.
We also ate at the restaurant across the street, and the food was great. I highly recommend the apple streusel! So good!!

My husband, grown son and I really enjoyed this tour! I didn't really know what to expect, but it was interesting and different. I had no idea where salt came from!
The little train ride into the mountain was fun, as was the boat ride and slides down the hills. You have to put on a full mining suit, and put your valuables in a locker. They said no cell phones but a bunch of people had them and were taking pictures all along our tour, which kind of stunk, but oh well.
We had English audio headsets while the tour guide spoke in German. He seemed pretty bored with his job so we were just as happy to have the headsets.
Overall a very fun activity!

I will have a dog with me. Can I bring the golden retriever on the salt mine tour?
Thanks!

#1 Is the car parking free of charge?
#2 Last tour is listed at 4:45pm, anyone took that last tour, is it ok or do you feel rushed?
#3 Have anyone purchased the combination ticket with Eagle's Nest, wonder if we can use it on different day (Day 1 Salt Mine, Day 2 Eagle's Nest)?
The parking lot in Salzburger Straße 24, 83471 is rented and therefore not free of charge. Every tour lasts about one hour, also the last tour at 5:00 pm. We recommend to buy online tickets so that you can avoid waiting times. The combined ticket with the Eagles Nest is valid for three days. We would be very pleased to welcome you in our Salt Mine!

It depends on fitness level. My husband is 67, cardiac patient, but has no problem walking and breathing, he was able to do everything including the slides and enjoyed it.

I don't believe so. You can purchase your own photo, at 5 euros a piece, from the service counter, if you like the photo that was taken for you.

Hi MooseAlmighty,
We are considering the salt mine tours in Berchtesgaden and the in Salzburg and see that you have been to both. Which would you recommend over the other?
Thanks so much,
Shawn

Hi Shawn, It's a close call between the 2 mines and would likely depend on your location/itinerary. IMHO based purely on a mine visit, Berchtesgaden would get the vote. The wife said it was quicker with less walking. I thought it equally informative with a similar train ride into the mountain, slides down the levels and a lake, plus it is a working mine.
PS Sorry for the delay - just back (2 hours ago) from Salou Spain.

What is “Salt Works”? There is the mine only ticket for 17 Euros and then a ticket that includes the mine and Salt Works for 19.5 Euros. Was wondering which to get. Thank you!!’

How long is needed to fully enjoy the salt mines? Would it be possible to do the kognigsee ferry and cable car first thing in the morning and have time to enjoy the mine?

The guided tour underground takes about 1 hour. Please plan about 1,5 to 2 hours including buying your ticket, getting changed, welcome and returning the miners' clothes. Book the tickets online first to avoid the line is a good way to save time and all you have to do is to arrive a bit earlier and enjoy.
