About
The Museum Route in Cracow Saltworks Museum is located entirely on level III of the mine and is about 1.5 kilometres long. Sightseeing of the Route takes about 1 hour. Sightseeing of Museum Route does not entail any additional cost, it can be visited by the same ticket to the Mine. What are the major features on the Museum Route? The giant horse powered hoisting machines represent one of the chief attractions. The device known as the "Polish" is the world’s largest wooden mining machine! Lovers of arts and handicraft will surely be enchanted by paintings of Jan Matejko, the precious Horn of the Hewer Guild and a luxury train constructed for the top authorities of the Austria-Hungary Empire. The Museum Route also features smaller objects illustrating both work of historical Wieliczka miners, their customs and everyday life. There are also places that will attract attention of nature lovers, such as the exhibition of salt crystals from the famous Crystal Caves.

This tour costs around £20 for foreign visitors, about £5 more than Polish tours.
The tour starts with a descet down around 60 flights of stairs so anyone with bad knees or hips are in trouble!
The tour consists of A LOT of boring tunnels interspersed with some large caverns. No stalagtites etc.
There are some impressive 'churches' but again, very repetitive and man made carved statues in black salt.
The tour guide's English was fairly poor.
The tour groups run so close together you can't hear your guide above the ones in front and behind.
The lift back up to the top resembles a game of sardines for 8 people and is VERY RICKETY. Beware anyone even remotely claustrophobic.
Really disappoints. Expensive, poor guiding, very repetitive and physically quite a challenge....
Final thought, you may as well go on the Polish tours, they are cheaper and for the commentary 'this is a salt tunnel, this is a salt cavern' you may as well tag onto one of them.

This is probably one of, if not the best tourist experiences I have been two.
Our guide was engaging and interesting. The mines themselves were incredible and worth every bit of the entrance fee.
There are a lot of steps down which should be considered if not fully able, but this is part of the experience as you visit this underground world. (There’s an elevator back up)
Cannot recommend highly enough.

Great tour guide and experience, we were on the four o’clock tour and didn’t finish til around 6/6:30 which made the most of our time. However very difficult to get to via public transport we spent nearly two hours trying to get there as the trains were not running and bus stop is hard to find

Advise to pre book, we booked even before we left the UK as this is a very busy attraction and you'll see why!
We'd booked a private pick up from our hotel and a guided tour, and I can say this is probably the best option, our pick up was 0900 which arrived promptly in a 6 seater Mercedes-Benz mini bus, from old krakow square your only about 30 mins away from the salt mine, once there our driver guided us up to the attraction entrance got our tickets and said he'd be waiting at the drop off point upon our return, our tour started at 10 am and it lasts about 2, 2and a half hours, at this point I'd like to stress this is not a tour for anybody with disabilities.
The journey begins with a descent down the Danilowicz Shaft to Level I of the mine It is situated 64 m underground, thus the visitors have to walk down 380 stairs The next levels lead the tour participants even deeper, i.e. 135 m underground. There are 800 steps along the whole route. Saying this it's totally worth it.
It's well lit and not what you would ever imagine the salt is smooth and reminiscent of marble, the carvings and chapel chambers are a sight to behold, definitely one not to miss, a very informative tour with sights to make you gasp, and don't worry there's a lift that travels 4 meters a second that brings you back to the surface, a top day!

My friend and I had read the reviews and decided to visit the vast Salt Mines near Krakow.
It is an experience I would not want to repeat.
We joined our 30 or so fellow salt tourists for our English speaking tour
Very quickly it was clear that the female tour guide was unable to engender any enthusiasm for her job. Her whole manner was one of complete disengagement. Never once did she look directly at any member of the group, or respond positively to questions. It was as if she had a mental script that needed to be delivered in a near whispered monotone.
Due mainly to her lack of interest to her group and her poor detached delivery the time spent underground seemed more like 5 hours instead of the threatened 3. One was unable to break free free from the guide and ascend to the surface.
At the end of the tour our guide disappeared as quickly as she could leaving us to find our own way out. She failed to explain that if you wanted to avoid paying for the train that would take you to the surface you would face what at times is a lengthy wait for one of the two small lifts that take you up to the exit.
I am sure a more interested guide could make the visit more exciting and informative but unfortunately I would not want to take the risk.
Overall very disappointed.

The tours charge about 50 zlotys per person for the privilege of arriving and leaving by bus. Polish trains are fast and cheap: save yourself time and money by travelling from Krakow's main station on the regular suburban service that shuttles to and from Wieliczka, and enjoy the independence of arriving and leaving the mine exactly when you please.

Extension of the original tour. Worth it. It's another hour under the qround. I felt the salt in my nose. It was spending a week by the ocean. Stay as long as you can. Your nose and throat will thank you. Especially nowadays.

The tour of the salt mine was extremely interesting and our tour guide was excellent giving us all amazing facts about the lives of the mine workers throughout the ages. Highly recommended tour but be aware there are many steps to go down at the start of the tour.

The mines are very impressive and definitely worth the visit. Our issue was that the audio device for the tour did not work and this was the case for most of the people on our tour.

No. You can’t book the lift. You have to wait your turn to go to ground level

You can book online on their website (look on Google or other search engine) but the tickets are currently the same price as you would pay at the ticket office. I didn't know this before I visited but it would probably have saved quite a time by not having to queue for rather a long time.
