Mostly uphill trail for 2+ miles. There’s a place where there appears to have been a rock slide so the trail is lost. But if you traverse the rocks straight across you’ll come to the other side where the trail restarts. There are lots of rocks on the trail, so wearing hiking boots that protect your ankles are imperative. There are several waterfalls to be seen on the trail and up at Angel’s Rest. Some of our waterfall shots are taken with a telephoto lens or a drone.
Went with a couple of friends on 4/13. It was a little muddy, but not bad. The wildflowers were pretty. Lots of dogs on the trail. We were able to spot a couple of bear cubs in the distance that other kind hikers pointed out to us. The views were great. It was super windy at the top. I thought it was a solid moderate, was surprised to find it rated hard on alltrails.
I went for sunrise today Friday 4/18, there was only one other car in the lot at 5:30 but was nearly full when I returned around 7:30. I really underestimated the elevation gain difficulty. It’s a doozy but the views were very worth it! While the trail is very well maintained it is also very rocky with uneven terrain, sturdy boots for ankle support are a must in my opinion! It was also extremely windy and cold at the top, if you plan to hang there for a bit to enjoy the views I would pack a lightweight blanket.
The trail is an out and back type, continuously uphill then continuously downhill back down the same trail. Usually not my favorite type of trail but it made for a good workout going up and plenty of beautiful views and scenery to keep you entertained on the way down. View at the top was breath taking and theres lots of room to find your own private area and enjoy the view before heading back down.
Not the easiest for a quick hike given the steep unrelenting incline with few good rest spots. Totally doable for most folks with some patience and the payoff is an absolutely unreal view of the Columbia River Gorge. We even saw downtown Portland in the distance! Loads of flowers blooming at this time (mid April). A little muddy and several sections with large rocks that were slippery. None of the slippery parts were exposed at all so it never felt sketchy. The terrain was steep and heavily vegetated so there are few places for a bio break.
There are some pretty large areas of the hike that are rough with rocks. Shoes with cushion are a must! A few piles of dog poop in the middle of the trail this weekend. Layers for sun protection were nice to have. Lots of sunny areas! Parking was a nightmare, but we also went in the afternoon on a weekend. Absolutely beautiful at the top! Was a great accomplishment! So happy to have met so many friendly faces along the way too. The weather couldn’t have been more wonderful today! A nice breeze at the top, but so much sun.
