We often pass by this place when we go to NYU. The square is always full of performers. Great place to stop by if you happen to be in the area. It’s particularly beautiful in spring as it’s surrounded by cherry trees and tulips.

We’d been shopping around the area and still had 30 minutes to kill before our dinner reservation, so we decided to take a seat here. Lots of great people watching and we struck up nice conversations with locals and fellow tourists alike. There were food kiosks near, but we didn’t partake since we were waiting on dinner. It turned out to be a most pleasant and unexpected part of our day.

We went to sit in the park after shopping in Soho. It’s got a small restaurant which serves drinks and small kiosk with coffee. It s a bustling square where you can listen to live singers and just read a book on the benches.

We accidentally stumbled upon Union Square Park (we’re not usually that far downtown). It’s a very picturesque area and very nice. We happened to pass through on a Friday and they had a nice farmers market set up (I understand the market is year round on Fridays and Saturdays). The market had plants, fresh produce, baked goods, cheese, and alcohol. Really cool to walk through. We even came back on Saturday to check it out again. We got some great goat cheese from a little stand called LynnHaven and some moonshine from Full Moonshine. So cool. Will definitely be back!

I wasn't really sure why this is described as a place to visit when in NYC. To me it just seemed dirty and shabby, but maybe I was missing something. There was a market on when I visited but this seemed to add to the feeling of shabbiness rather than improve it. I couldn't really see what the square looked like as the stalls overran the whole place. Based on my experience I wouldn't recommend a visit.

Great area to explore. Mount Sinai Union Square is located right next to the park. There is a nice park to relax in or explore, shops, restaurants everywhere. Worth visiting.

A quick rest and walk around in the busy city. If you are going to visit the market plan to spend an hour or two. Many sellers in small stands offering to sell their goods (note – if you went to the Bryant Park market, these are the same sellers and small businesses). Anything from handmade notebooks and soap to fresh baked bread and food.

This park has a very Parisian feel. The farmer's market is incredible. Plenty of vendors selling great stuff. This is the ideal spot to enjoy a cup of coffee on a sunny day.

Park Quick Tips:
1. Subway brings you right to the park!
2. Plan your visit on a Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sat to enjoy NYCs largest Greenmarket (0800-1800). Vendors range from fruits and veggies, meats, cheese, bakery items and flowers
3. Lots of shade trees, benches, and tables to sit and stay awhile
4. A solar powered cell phone charging station!
5. Park had a lot of squirrels frolicking, some tame enough they would take bread from your hand
6. During the Christmas holiday there is also a holiday market
7. Dog run area/park

We started our day here at the Greenmarket grabbing a few croissants and empanadas (coffee from the Starbucks across the street), sat in a shaded cove and let the squirrels entertain us…we then spent the rest of the day making a giant loop around the surrounding Gramercy Square/Flatiron district based on a walking tour we found in the DK NYC guidebook and adding a few other great ideas from other TA members:
a) Gramercy Park (peek through the fence) and it’s nearby ‘Block Beautiful’
b) Madison Square Park (Shake Shack and amazing views of the Flatiron); Summer evenings offers free Wednesday night concerts; month of May for Mad. Sq. Eats
c) Ladies Mile
d) Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace (FREE; hidden gem! See my separate review)—and bathrooms too…
e) ABC Carpet and Home—for every decorating idea and home furnishing you can imagine
f) ‘Beechers’ for world’s best mac-n-cheese and to watch cheese makers in action
g) ‘City Bakery’ for one of NYC’s ranked cookies and hot chocolate spots

Plot you adventure on an internet map…and you’re off…have a great day!

You see it all here whether it be stuffy folks to the homeless. There are a number of nice shade trees and some benches to watch the world go by.
