Wide Sargasso Sea is the 1966 novel answer to Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre written by Jean Rhys. The book looks at the events of Jane Eyre from the perspective of Antoinette Cosway, the mad wife in the attic of Mr. Rochester. The book is broken up into three parts. Part one looks at Antoinette's childhood on a Jamaican plantation. It details the abolition of slavery in the region and how Antoinette's brother is killed in a plantation fire set by the freed slaves. Antoinette's mother has a mental break at this point and is sent away from Antoinette until death. Part two alternates between the views of Antoinette and her new husband. This part shows how the marriage degrades and looks at how Antoinette is cast aside by her husband. Part three looks at the life that Antoinette was living in the attic. It shows that she is clearly mad and has lost time.
