Day trip to Canberra from Sydney

Hi, I plan to make a day trip from Sydney to Canberra during the last week of September. I do not have a driving license, so the only way to get to Canberra is via public transport. Murray bus provides such a service and the first bus leaves Sydney Central Station at 8am, arriving at Canberra Jolimont Centre at about 11.30am and the last bus leaves Canberra at 6pm. I have about 6 hours to explore Canberra and the 2 places that I would like to visit are the Australian Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial. To get from one place to another, I plan to take taxi, just wondering is it feasible? How is the traffic in the evening, especially when I have to get back to Canberra Jolimont Centre before 6pm to catch the last bus back to Sydney. Any advices is much appreciated, thank you!

It is going to be pretty rushed. It would be better if you could make it an overnight stay giving you more than a day.

i spent almost 5 hours just at the War Memorial - there is a lot to see and the closing ceremony is very poignant and worth staying for.

I guess you could do this but it would mean a rushed visit and short changing Canberra.

Do able,

I'd do PH in the AM as it closes at 4:30pm

The last post ceremony is entry from 4:20 and ceremony from 4:45pm from memory it goes around 30mins so plenty of time IMO to get back to Jolimont.

I believe Greyhound buses have an earlier option arriving around 10:30AM

Last week of September is school holidays. This may affect your plans. You will also need to decide what you are going to do quickly

Hi,

It's doable but far too rushed IMHO. I would never recommend a bus trip to anyone other than from the CBD to Bondi.

Canberra needs a week to scratch the surface.

What does the rest of your trip look like ?

If you are visiting Melbourne I would fly Sydney, Canberra , Melbourne, with at least two nights in Canberra to yield one full day.

If only visiting Sydney cut a day or three off and visit Canberra.

Cheers,

There is Taxi Rank at Jolimont , at that time of day going to Parliament House would be 10 mins and the traffic will be light. Going from Parliament House to AWM. I think you are going need to Phone a Taxi. You night get lucky if you see on dropping off . As this will be earlier afternoon it will be about 10 mins drive.

Leaving from AWM in the late afternoon is a bit of an issue , the traffic by Canberra Standard will be heavy. It is referred to as the Public Service Grand Prix Time. The issue is getting out AWN is not controlled by traffic Lights. So getting on to Limestone Ave is an issue. If I had to catch a taxi at that time of the day to Jolimont , I would cross Limestone Ave and walk to the Nearby Hotel and have that as my pick up point. This would be 10-15mins . The traffic on Limestone is heavy and then the driver needs to cross Northbourne Ave. Tell the driver to drop you off at the back of the building. This will be the same as when you come in from Sydney on the Coach.

Murrays also like you to be on the departing coach 10 mins before. If they have all passenger on they make even leave earlier .

Good Luck

I was in Canberra last month and there does seem to be a fair bit of road & other work going on around the War Memorial. (Observed on the way to the airport in an Uber, not close-up).

Murrays coaches are great and I've used them twice for a one-day trip to Canberra from Sydney. But those were for specific exhibitions at the NGA & Portrait Gallery & a lunch; not what the OP has in mind, which is rather more extensive. Like others, I do think you might have a challenge getting from the War Memorial back to Jolimont Centre for that 6pm departure.

Timetables on various days may differ, but I just checked Greyhound for 29 June & their latest departure seems to be 18:20, so not a lot of extra wriggle room.

Good Luck, I hope you find a way to do the trip. Could you perhaps stretch to an overnight stay? As everyone else says, you can easily spend a couple of days in Canberra.

I used Ubers in Canberra this trip and found the service excellent.

The War Memorial is undergoing significant renovations, keep an eye on this for updates https://www.awm.gov.au/ourcontinuingstory/current-works/

"Changes have been made to the roads around our site, and lower speed limits have been implemented to accommodate increased movement of construction vehicles."

Hi everyone, thank you for the useful advices. I thought carefully about it and I have decided to skip Canberra for this Sydney trip. It will be too rush to make a 6 hours round trip to Canberra, just to spend a couple of hours in the city.
