Election updates

This section will be updated throughout election day; be sure to check back for more updates.

  • November 14, 2019 2:15 p.m. Eastern: Following the recanvass, Gov. Matt Bevin (R) conceded the Kentucky gubernatorial race to Andy Beshear (D).[1]
  • 2:44 p.m. Eastern: Matt Bevin (R) requested a recanvass in the race for Kentucky governor. With 100% of precincts reporting, unofficial results had Andy Beshear (D) leading Bevin by 0.4 percentage points or about 5,000 votes.
  • 9:38 a.m. Eastern: The Working Families Party won an at-large seat on the Philadelphia City Council for the first time in city history Tuesday. On the 17 seat council, 10 seats are elected by district and seven are elected at large. Each party may nominate only five candidates for the at-large seats. Since Philadelphia's charter was adopted in 1951, every city council election has resulted in Democrats winning five at-large seats and Republicans winning two.
  • 8:46 a.m. Eastern: Houston's mayoral election will head to a December 14 runoff. Incumbent Sylvester Turner received 47% of the vote (short of the majority required to avoid a runoff) to Tony Buzbee's 28 percent.
  • 2:13 a.m. Eastern: The district attorney election in San Francisco, California, was too close to call, with partial results from just under 100% of precincts.
  • 1:54 a.m. Eastern: The Working Families Party gained a seat on the Philadelphia City Council for the first time in city history, according to unofficial election results.
  • 12:54 a.m. Eastern: Preliminary results became available in Seattle, Washington's city council elections. Seattle uses a vote-by-mail process. Races have not yet been called, as ballots are still being counted. The 2019 races had seen a record-breaking $4.3 million in satellite spending through November 1. Click here to view preliminary results.
  • 12:04 a.m. Eastern: Results showed Republicans retained majority control of the Mississippi State Senate and House of Representatives. With Tate Reeves' (R) victory in the gubernatorial election, Mississippi will remain a Republican state government trifecta.
  • 11:34 p.m. Eastern: CNN projected that Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves defeated Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood in Mississippi's gubernatorial election. Alongside Lynn Fitch’s (R) victory in the attorney general election and Michael D. Watson Jr.’s (R) victory in the secretary of state election, Reeves’ win secures a Republican triplex (control of the top three executive offices) for the first time since 1876.
  • 10:10 p.m. Eastern: The Associated Press predicted that the Democratic Party won control of the Virginia House of Delegates. Heading into the election, Republicans held a 51-49 majority. Virginia will be a Democratic state government trifecta for the first time since 1993. At the same time, the AP declared Kentucky's gubernatorial election too close to call.
  • 9:29 p.m. Eastern: The Associated Press predicted that the Democratic Party won control of the Virginia State Senate. Heading into the election, Republicans held a 21-19 majority.
  • 8:56 p.m. Eastern: The Associated Press called Kentucky's secretary of state election for Republican Michael Adams. The gubernatorial race remains uncalled. If Matt Bevin (R) wins, Republicans will have gained triplex control of the state. If Andy Beshear (D) wins, the state will remain under divided triplex control.
  • 8:04 p.m. Eastern: WLEX called Kentucky's attorney general election for Republican Daniel Cameron. Democrats have held the office since 1948.
