Thoughts on Episode 1 The Nurple Rainbow

First let me say Holy Shit. I've seen a few other episodes in random order and haven't binged. Oh boy does this show combine a bunch of my favorite things. Stop motion that allows freedom and a sense of physicality. Stories that speak to humans' inner minds. Fears made real through surrealism and absurdity. Dark comedy that can delight and terrify. Words have power and literal expression can be taken into literal and figurative paths.

The first story delves into a fear of what others put in us, what we put in others, and that we may all truly be filled with terrible things on the inside.

The second story can be a story of loss, of mistakes, the dark underbelly of society, and how we can willingly close ourselves off from others without realizing the repercussions.

The third story brings real world horrors into a black comedy of acceptance and rejection. The audience cheers at the triumphant talking head and when any sympathy is given to his beheader, the beheader must disappear.

The fourth story speaks again to fitting in. How we can exist in a state that is irregular, beyond our control, judged, and have the world reject without providing help or sympathy. In the end even violence doesn't fix problems despite their volume.

The fifth story is pretty direct with its message of self love to build confidence and of the results that can come from that confidence. The fruits of our labors then burden and fracture, both the external and internal results.

What a fast trip to existential dread.
