A very touching, well handled drama from writer Tony Grounds that explores a last chance of love for two lonely men in their sixties.
Alun Armstrong is a genteel retired schoolteacher whose entire life has been a closeted one devoted to his work. Paul Freeman is a sometime West Ham hooligan and widowed London cabbie with two grown up kids (Jason Flemyng and Tamzin Outhwaite) and grandchildren he adores. A chance encounter affords both men the opportunity to see the world through one another's eyes, mutual self-discovery and ultimately the path to a loving relationship.
A sweet film to kick-start Pride month. Wishing all the best to my LGBTQI comrades and a super uncomfortable month to all homophobes like Flemyng's character!
Ageing footie thug and Cockney cabbie Ray (Paul Freeman), a widower with grasping kids, meets refined retired teacher Jim (Alun Armstrong) and strikes up an unusual friendship which forces him to reassess his priorities, his feelings and his prejudices.
The BBC drama took what is still a thorny subject and treated it with class and sensitivity, helped enormously by the playing of Armstrong in particular.
As Ray's kids, Jason Flemyng and Tamsin Outhwaite have little to do but do it well. As the terminally-ill friend and fellow ex-thug Billy, Karl Johnson is also very good.
A well-written, well-directed piece of drama which only lets itself down by the enforced contrast between the backgrounds of the two lead characters, and with the (almost) cop-out ending.
I'd love to see this one again!
Oh man this film is so sweet! I'm a big fan of Alun Armstrong's so when I found out about this I went a bit insane trying to find it but it was honestly so much better than I'd begun to even hope for. This intimacy in this film is so moving and it was so unexpected, especially from a film from 2004. I've seen very few films with two older men that have been brave enough to go for that, if any. I love the way their interactions are built and the slowburn aspect really allows for a lot of depth in their relationship and what they mean to one another. The scene with the tattoos. I do wish we'd had Alun's accent in it and the colour scheme is a bit bleak, but their relationship kind of blossoms in the every day anyway so I can forgive it that. I'd really recommend it.
gosh this was extremely heartwarming and cute. the only issue i think is that they have absolutely no idea how airports and airplanes work, because as far as i know it's way harder to just arrive there and ask for a ticket and then just get on the plane. as far as i know.
feels so refreshing to get a sweet romantic story like this about two older men. definitely a hidden gem
