The 5 Best Under Armour Training Shoes of 2024

The wide range of Under Armour training shoes on the market can make it a little overwhelming when deciding on which model to go with based on the context of your training needs and wants.

Not every Under Armour training shoe is created equal and that’s why it’s a good idea to identify what you want in your Under Armour training shoe before investing. For example, do you want shoes for CrossFit WODs or shoes for HIIT workouts?

After testing pretty much every Under Armour training shoe under the sun over countless workouts, I’ve built this list to reflect my top picks in various performance categories.

Best UA Training Shoes and My Tips

Tip 1 — Reference How You Train and My Picks

It can be confusing when sifting through the different UA training shoes out right now because every model is built slightly different and they each excel in various ways.

I would highly suggest creating a list of 2 or 3 main asks that you have with your UA shoes when searching. For example, do you need a model for CrossFit and lifting? This will help narrow down your picks.

My Top UA Shoe Training Shoe Picks

Tip 2 — Midsole Density Matters

Under Armour uses a wide range of materials for their training shoes’ midsole. For example, you’ll typically see either Micro G Foam, HOVR, or Flow midsoles in UA training shoes.

All of these midsoles vary regarding their densities and plushness. This can then translate how each shoe performs in certain workouts and training settings.

  • Micro G Foam: Densest midsole foam
  • HOVR Foam: Medium-density foam
  • Flow Foam: Soft and plusher foam

Tip 3 — Outsole Tread Is Important

Similar to your UA shoe’s midsole, the outsole matters a ton for different performance asks. If you’re doing explosive exercises, heavy lifts, or outdoor training then you’ll want to explore options with full rubber outsoles.

Most UA shoes will utilize full rubber outsoles to begin with, however, some options like the UA Flow Dynamic don’t and that’s to save on weight but that comes at a cost of grip and long-term durability.

Best UA Shoes for Functional Fitness and Cross-Training

When assessing the best Under Armour training shoe for functional fitness, I’m primarily concerned with a model’s stability, versatility, and durability. Cross-training and functional fitness workouts can be tough on shoes, so you need a pair with good durability.

Top Pick: Under Armour TriBase Reign 6

The Under Armour TriBase Reign 6 has delivered a dynamic performance in the gym. This model feels athletic for cross-training and CrossFit while delivering a good level of stability for heavy training.

  • Pros: Great for versatile training, upper is secure and feels athletic, outsole has awesome grip
  • Cons: Drop-in midsole may not resonate with everyone
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 2mm
  • Weight: 13 oz (for my size 10 model)
  • Removable Insole: Yes
  • Sizing: True to Size

  • For Runs Over a Mile

The Under Armour TriBase Reign 6 works exceptionally well for functional fitness workouts and cross-training. This shoe has a nice blend of stability and versatility which gives it a seamless performance in most CrossFit WODs, too.

The drop-in midsole in this shoe has a good density and I’ve squatted up to 415 lbs and deadlifted over 500 lbs in this shoe without major compression issues. For most strength sessions, this model should be plenty fine for most.

Under Armour TriBase Reign 6 Stability Testing

The WARP upper in the TriBase Reign 6 does a good job with durability for most training sessions, too. For example, if you like to blend strength sessions with CrossFit WODs every week then this shoe shouldn’t break down fast on you.

The TriBase tech on the outsole of the Reign 6 is also a nice touch for promoting traction, stability, and balance. This shoe is a good option for anyone needing an Under Armour model for a little bit of everything each week.

Best UA Shoes for HIIT and Classes

When assessing shoes for classes and interval-style workouts I’m primarily concerned with responsiveness, security, and traction. These all need to be on point for fast-paced workouts with jumping, multi-directional exercises, and short runs.

1. UA HOVR Rise 4

If you need a shoe primarily for workout classes that involve a lot of HIIT-style exercises then you’ll enjoy the UA HOVR Rise 4. This shoe is lightweight, responsive for jumping and short runs, and has good upper security.

  • Pros: Good upper security, bounce and responsive HOVR midsole, solid traction with TriBase outsole
  • Cons: TPU can cause the laces to break down fast, narrower toe box
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 11.2 oz (for my size 10 model)

  • For CrossFit-Style Training
  • For Long-Term Durability

The UA HOVR Rise 4 can be a strong pick for anyone primarily doing interval training and class workouts every week. Please note, if you also like to lift heavy and want a UA shoe for HIIT and heavy training then the TriBase Reign 5 will work fine for your needs.

In the HOVR Rise 4, you have Under Armour’s HOVR midsole which gives this shoe a lot of “bounce” and responsiveness when doing things like jump rope, squat jumps, and skater strides.

Under Armour HOVR Rise 4 try on review

The bootie-style construction on this shoe locks the foot down well which is something I also appreciated when testing this shoe for circuit workouts. I never felt like I was sliding around in this model and it stayed put on the foot.

On the outsole, you have TriBase tech which helps give this shoe a little more balance when doing single-leg work and it’s a feature that UA also uses in models like the Reign 5 and UA Project Rock 6.

Best UA Weightlifting Shoes

For the first time, Under Armour has its own weightlifting shoe and it even made my best weightlifting shoes round-up. If you want a heel-elevated shoe for squats, weightlifting, and other lower-body accessories the Reign lifter should work well for you.

Top Pick: Under Armour Reign Lifter

If you need consistent weightlifting shoes that are good for beginner and experienced lifters then the UA Reign Lifter can work well. This shoe’s TPU midsole is stable for heavy squats and its upper security is exceptionally strong.

  • Pros: Good stability under heavy sets, great upper security, outsole has a nice grip
  • Cons: Upper lacks breathability
  • Max Weight Squatted In These (thus far!): 405 lb back squat, 375 lb front squat
  • Effective Heel Height: 19.7mm/.77″
  • Weight: 18.85 oz (for my size 10 model)
  • Removable Insole: Yes
  • Sizing: True to size (neutral width)

  • For Wider Feet

For their first attempt at making a weightlifting shoe, I’ve been very impressed with the UA Reign Lifter. I know it’s technically the “only” pick in this performance category, but I do think it would be my top pick regardless if UA had multiple models.

The UA Reign Lifter features a TPU midsole that gives you a ton of stability for heavy squats, weightlifting, and accessories like leg presses when you want heel elevation to drive a quad bias.

Testing the UA Reign Lifter for squats

I also like the upper security that you get with the UA Reign Lifter. This shoe’s heavier upper locks the foot down well when catching cleans and the midfoot strap feels well-built and provides additional support for this context.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced lifter I feel like the UA Reign Lifter can be a good weightlifting shoe to explore. Plus, these shoes should last you a while if you take good care of them.

Best UA Training Shoes for Running

If you’re for training shoes for lifting and running then you’ll want to explore options that walk that fine line between being responsive and comfortable for running but also stable enough for some strength work.

Top Pick: UA Flow Dynamic

If you need a “true” hybrid training shoe for short runs and light strength workouts then the UA Flow Dynamic can be a great pick. This shoe’s Flow midsole is responsive and comfortable and this shoe is lightweight and breathable.

  • Pros: Upper is lightweight and highly breathable, Flow midsole is responsive, easy to get on and off
  • Cons: Not great for lifts over 225 lbs, outsole isn’t great on concrete
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 9.4 oz (for my size 10 model)

  • Casual HIIT Workouts/Classes

Falls Short

  • For Heavy Lifting
  • For Foot Security
  • For Advanced Plyometrics

The UA Flow Dynamic training shoe is built to be a true “hybrid” option for anyone needing a shoe for both running and lifting. This model is interesting and it’s super niche with its construction.

Now, will the Flow Dynamic work for your heavy strength sessions? No, and it’s important to keep in mind that hybrid training shoes will always lack specific when it comes to pushing intensities and extremes with your workouts.

Testing the UA Flow Dynamic for short runs

That said, if you want a model for some light to moderate strength workouts with 1-3 miles blended in then you’ll enjoy what the Flow Dynamic has to offer with its upper, midsole, and outsole.

This shoe is lightweight and it breathes well so it feels seamless and easy to wear for most short runs. On top of this, the Flow midsole should be stable enough for strength sessions where you’re doing lighter working sets.

Best UA Training Shoes for Flat Feet

Over the last few years, Under Armour has seemed to make more of their training shoes a little more flat-feet-friendly. Not every offered by UA works well for flat feet, though, so if you need more picks then I’d suggest looking at my best shoes for flat feet lift

Top Pick: UA TriBase Reign 5

If you’re after an Under Armour shoe that can work for flatter feet then the TriBase Reign 5 will be one of the better picks to explore. UA made this model wider than its prior iterations and it has a flatter 2mm heel-to-toe drop.

  • Pros: Strong well-rounded performance, good option for flat feet, stable and versatile midsole
  • Cons: Midsole can feel chunky for some
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 2mm
  • Weight: 13.6 oz (for my size 10 model)

  • Cross-Training & Athletic Workouts
  • HIIT Workouts
  • Lower Heel-to-Toe Drop Lovers

Falls Short

  • For Wide Feet
  • For Longer Runs

If you have flat feet and you want an Under Armour then your best bet will be the UA TriBase Reign 5. This model has the least amount of a taper from the midfoot into the forefoot.

Plus, this Reign iteration has a slightly wider last construction than the prior TriBase Reign shoes. I have an E-width foot and this shoe works well with my foot width and I never feel limited in this model’s midfoot.

Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 Performance Review

Outside of its fit for flat and even slightly wider feet, the TriBase Reign 5 delivers a strong well-rounded performance in the gym. This model is always one of my go-to picks for lifters that want that “all-in-one” style training shoe.

The Micro G foam midsole is stable for heavy lifting but responsive enough to work for athletic-focused workouts and the TriBase outsole promotes a good level of traction and additinoal stability and balance.

How to Clean Under Armour Shoes

If you’re trying to clean your Under Armour shoes, then I’d highly suggest avoiding washing and drying machines and instead spot-cleaning them. This is a tip that I recommend for all cross-training shoes especially if you’re trying to get the most out of your shoes regarding lifespan.

To properly clean your Under Armour training shoes, follow the three steps below.

  • Step 1: Grab a washcloth, a soft soap that is void of harsh fragrances and colors, and lukewarm water.
  • Step 2: Get the washcloth damp, apply a little soap, then wipe down areas on your shoes that need some attention.
  • Step 3: Repeat this process until your shoes are clean. When you’re ready to dry them, take out your shoe’s insoles and place them in a dry area or by a vent and let them air dry.

This process can take a little longer than throwing your shoes in washing and drying machines, but doing this will add months to your shoe’s lifespans and is well worth it for your investment.

Takeaway Thoughts

All of the Under Armour training shoes featured in this article are good within their own unique rights. Every model has a list of pros and cons and will perform better in certain activities compared to other shoes based on their construction.

I think if you can narrow down how you plan to train in your Under Armour shoes, then you’ll be much better equipped to make good investments and get the most of your shoes.

  1. I just ordered a pair of the project Rock 4s the camo ones. You listed that they have removable insoles, but the ones I have here are most certainly sewn right into the shoe. Was this a mistake or am I missing something?

    1. Hey Colin! Ef. You’re totally right, I must have missed that in my final edit of this article because I have that mentioned in my individual product review article/video. Good eyes and thanks for letting me know!

  2. Hey, after a few days of researching and watching review after review, I’ve narrowed down my search for a good cross trainer to the ua Hovr Rise 2, and the ua project rock 3’s. I workout at the gym around 4-5 days a week and run around 3-4 miles each week on the treadmill. I’ve also been searching for shoes with more stability than my running shoes, as my left foot is flat and pronates inward quite a bit. These would also be my daily errand shoes. The price difference of $40 isn’t really a big deal either to me. Which of these do you think you would recommend for my workout style?

    1. Hey Zack! IMO, I would go with the HOVR Rise 2. The PR3 is an okay model, but honestly, if you’re thinking about the Project Rock line and not phased by their price points, then opting for the 4 would be a better call. They perform better and have a truer fit to them.

The HOVR Rise 2 is an awesome model though. It will last you a while, performs well in different contexts, and you can’t beat the price. I hope that helps with the search. Either way, I don’t think you can go wrong with your two picks here — my only piece of advice is to opt 4 over 3 if you go the PR route!

  3. Hello, i am currently hesitant between UA rise 3 and apex 3
Since both have the tribase technology and cushioning.. So which one is more suitable for
Running, basketball, jumping ropes and HIIT training.. Weight lifting is not important more important is agility and most certainly cushioning and absorbing impact as i already suffer from knee issues 🙂

    1. Great questions — IMO, the HOVR Rise 3 is a tad more lightweight in how it feels + performs. TBH, I think either model will work plenty fine for your needs and I’d say go with the shoe the matches your budget! You’ll likely save a bit more on the HOVR Rise 3 and it will perform better/similarly to the Apex!
