With every new Tarsem movie, I hope all over again for something like The Fall, his insane many-year, many-country labor-of-love fairy-tale project which represents him working at the height of his ambition. This film, for all its hooky science-fiction plotting, is more like the nadir of his ambition. Even with Tarsem's work-for-hire stuff, there's always been a sense of his personality in his films (The Cell, Mirror Mirror, Immortals) in the vivid, operatic visuals. This film is shot anonymously and blandly. Nothing about it suggests Tarsem's presence at all. A sci-fi thriller so derivative of John Frankenheimer’s masterfully paranoid SECONDS it would be more accurate to call it THIRDS, Tarsem Singh’s Self/less is a generic waste of a clever idea. A resurrection parable that has all the integrity of a grave robber, this frustrating bit of pulp is actually worse than the punctuation of its title might suggest (especially since Face/Off and Crazy/Beautiful gave the forward slash such a good name).

But seriously, never thought I'd say this about a Tarsem Singh film, but man, Self/less is one of the most visually bland films of the year. I already expected a clichéd story, but visually it's a disappointment as well. Like, there are some REALLY ugly shots here and there. Kind of sad, actually.
One of the most pointless and boring experiences I've had at a movie theater in a while. It's not bad, per se, it's just dull as hell.
They say youth is wasted on the young,
So Ben Kingsley trades in for new lungs.
Oh, and a body,
Of Reynolds the hottie,
A body switch movie but missing the fun.
Kingsley? Love him! Reynolds? Love him. Sci-fi? Love it. Story of Kingsley putting himself in Reynolds body in a sci-fi thriller? Sounds like my cup of tea. Except no. No it wasnt.
It was slow (even for a short film). It was boring. The action was...meh. Even this review is as poorly written as the film. Did I care? No. Did I see it all coming? Yes. Did Reynolds, Kingsley, Goode and Dockery do this for the money? Probably.
Will I watch it again? No, I probably wont even think of it again.

Self/Less, the movie I just watched again cuz my brother forced me :))
The movie in general it covers many topics about eternal life, identity confusion, the morality of scientific research and the cost of aging. However, the script doesn't consist of characters that are complex enough to present these issues to the audience in a wonderful way. A theme with infinite potential like desire for immortality is horribly reduced to mere action and escape sequences... After a while, I continued watching just for Ryan Reynolds.
All in all, it's a fun movie to watch, but it's not worth watching again due to its ridiculous ending and mediocre pacing.
I preferred Ryan Reynolds when he was Ben Kingsley, and would pick John Frankenheimer's similarly turned Seconds for a little body swapping chaos given the choice.
Ein weiteres Mehr-So-Geht-So-Exemplar eines Science-Fiction-Thrillers mit interessanter Idee und mittelmäßiger Umsetzung. Die Prämisse gibt viel Spielraum für fundamentale Genrezusätze, aber Self/less ist erneut ein Besipiel eines Filmes, der sich mit seiner Prämisse nicht tiefer auseinandersetzt und dementsprechend dem flachen Durchschnitt verkommt. Wirklich schade, denn die Geschichte liefert genug Ansatzpunkte und das Talent vor der Kamera ist auch da, allgemein fallen die Figuren und Storyline jedoch wie gewohnt platt aus. So hat man einen kompetent produzierten Action-Thriller mit unterentwickeltem Sci-Fi-Kniff, der lediglich auf technischer Seite mit seinen hektisch geschnittenen Action-Sequenzen negativ auffällt. Letztendlich bietet Self/less kurzweilige, inhaltlich simplifizierte zwei Stunden mit einem überzeugenden Ryan Reynolds und interessanten Denkanstößen, die ihr volles Potenzial aber bei weitem nicht ausschöpfen.
A surprisingly solid science fiction film that combines sturdy action with genre tropes, "Self/less" is an engaging observation of the human quest for immortality. The observation here, however, throws in body swapping, gunplay, and Ryan Reynolds for a film that is entertaining and boasts sufficient depth.
Directed by Tarsem Singh, "Self/less" stars Ben Kingsley as a sick man who possesses the resources needed to extend his life by placing it a younger human vessel. That vessel, however, comes with its own memories and history, making it all a less-than-clean bid for immortality.
