Thinking of leasing a Ford Ranger?

The U.S. News Best Price Program saves users an average of $1,824 off the MSRP, and a lower price equals lower monthly lease payments. That means you could see a savings of $90 a month on a 36-month lease.

Drive and Performance 7.9/10

Handling and ride quality have both improved with the latest Ranger generation. It's quiet and composed around town and manages to cushion the blow of most road imperfections fairly well. On a less positive note, most critics agree that the steering continues to feel numb.

Ford stayed with the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder for its base engine, though a new twin-turbo 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine is available on higher trims. Though drivers will undoubtedly be curious about the more potent version, the base engine puts out plenty of power for average driving needs. If you need more aggressive off-road performance, the Ranger Raptor features a robust twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6. A smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission is standard across the lineup and can be paired with either rear- or four-wheel drive. The Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds (5,510 pounds for the Raptor).

Fuel Economy 8.5/10

The 2024 Ford Ranger gets decent gas mileage for a compact pickup truck. Rear-wheel drive models with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four engine achieve 21 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel-drive models with the same engine dip slightly to 20/24 mpg city/highway. Models with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost six-cylinder are rated at 19/23 mpg city/highway. The Ranger Raptor, which has a 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine, drops to 16/18 mpg city/highway.

Interior 6.6/10

The new Ranger's interior is a noticeable improvement over the outgoing generation, though it remains minimalistic. It can seat up to five people, and there's an impressive amount of head- and legroom for a midsize pickup. The standard cloth bucket seats upfront offer plenty of cushioning and support, and even the bench seat in the rear is decently comfortable.

Now only available as a Crew Cab, the Ranger comes with a 5-foot bed measuring 43.5 cubic feet, which is good for a compact pickup truck. Also, its 4-foot width means you can now fit sheets of plywood nicely between the wheel wells. Payload capacity ranges between 1,375 and 1,805 pounds. While there's additional room underneath the rear seats and the seat backs fold flat to accommodate more cargo, interior storage could be better.

Value 7.8/10

The 2024 Ford Ranger has an average value rating for the compact pickup truck class. We determine value based on the vehicle's estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle's MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety 8.4/10

The 2024 Ranger hasn't been crash tested, and this Ford has a modest suite of standard driver-assistance features, including a rearview camera and blind-spot monitoring. More advanced safety features are found on higher trims.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

Quality and Reliability 87.0/100

The 2024 Ford Ranger has a predicted reliability score of 87 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Critics’ Rating 6.9/10

The 2024 Ford Ranger receives a critics' rating that is below average for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.

Pricing

How Much Is a 2024 Ford Ranger?

Once considered one of the more affordable compact pickup options, the 2024 Ford Ranger's remodel has pushed it into pricier territory compared to many rivals. The entry-level Ranger XL has a starting MSRP of $32,670 for the rear-wheel drive model, and it comes with standard features like cloth upholstery, a 10-inch touch screen and Apple CarPlay. The XLT trim starts at $35,610 for the rear-wheel drive model and includes extras such as wireless device charging and lane-keep assist. The price of the rear-wheel-drive Lariat rises to $43,630, and it's additional amenities include leather upholstery, a 12-inch touch screen, a heated steering wheel and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo. Finally, the new-to-the-U.S. Ranger Raptor starts at $55,470 and features standard all-wheel drive, a 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine and exclusive off-road equipment such as Fox shocks and locking front and rear axles.

Which Is the Best Ford Ranger Model to Buy?

We recommend the midtier XLT trim. For a modest price bump, you get all the goodies from the XL trim plus amenities such as wireless device charging, satellite radio and remote start. It also comes with plenty of extra standard driver-assistance features, including lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want safety features like adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, enhanced park assist and navigation, add the Technology package ($1,560).

Is the 2024 Ford Ranger a Good Truck?

Yes, the 2024 Ranger is a good compact pickup that's even better with its latest redesign. It features more refined road manners, a peppier engine and impressive advanced towing technology if you plan on doing any trailering.

That said, the Ranger has several worthy opponents to consider before you make your final purchase decision. The Hyundai Santa Cruz and Honda Ridgeline are unibody pickups, which means they drive more like a car than a truck, so you can expect a more comfortable and refined ride quality. If you need a little more muscle for towing and/or hauling, the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado both have a higher towing capacity than the Ranger. And if you value fuel economy above all else, the Ford Maverick should be your go-to.

2023 vs. 2024 Ford Ranger: What's the Difference?

For 2024, the Ranger is fully redesigned from the inside out. Among the changes, Ford adds an available 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 to the engine lineup, along with advanced towing technology, fold-flat rear seats and a wider (4-foot) bed. Also, the performance-focused new-to-the-U.S. Ranger Raptor joins the trim lineup. Lastly, Ford discontinued the SuperCab body style, making the Crew Cab the only option.

Here are the key changes for the Ford Ranger over the last few years:

  • 2024: fully redesigned (start of fifth generation); new engine options; performance-oriented Ranger Raptor now available in U.S.; SuperCab discontinued
  • 2023: no notable changes
  • 2022: Splash appearance package debuted
  • 2021: Tremor off-road package introduced
  • 2020: FX-2 off-road package became available

2024 Ford Ranger Versus the Competition

Ford Ranger vs. Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevy Colorado leads the compact pickup truck segment in terms of towing capability, with a 7,700-pound capacity that bests the Ranger's 7,500-pound limit. Like the Ford, this Chevy is only available in a Crew Cab body style, and its interior quality is a bit spartan unless you opt for higher trims. The Colorado's standard infotainment touch screen is larger, and its base starting price is lower than the Ranger's, but the Chevy's entry-level trim's engine is not as powerful as the Ford's. The Raptor competes directly with the Colorado ZR2 Bison, and both possess impressive off-road capabilities. Overall, the Colorado has the slight edge, but both trucks are worth checking out.

Ford Ranger vs. Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is also redesigned for 2024, and it offers more trim choices, including a hybrid option. Even the lowest trims have better interiors and stronger engines than the Ranger, making them more attractive to potential buyers looking for capable work trucks. Moving up the Tacoma trim ladder gets you more refined driving dynamics and greater off-road capabilities. The Ford has the upper hand when it comes to towing and rear-seat legroom, but the Toyota gives you more standard features for the price. Your decision will likely come down to personal preference.
