Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is a 2011 fighting video game and the third title in Capcom's titular crossover series with Marvel Comics. It was also the first game to be published after Disney's acquisition of Marvel in 2009, which saw tighter restrictions regarding the use and portrayal of Marvel's intellectual property in licensed media such as video games.

The game was developed in response to the dedicated cult following that had emerged over the decade after the release of 2000's Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes and was intended to capitalize on the success of the several Hollywood adaptations that had followed in the years subsequent, as well as growing interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) leading up to the release of the 2012 film The Avengers.

The success of the game led to the development of Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite in 2017, which saw the return of Chris Redfield and the Nemesis T-Type as playable fighters, as well as featuring in the game's story mode.

Plot[]

In response to an unexpected merger of the Marvel and Capcom universes, two masterminds of each: Victor Von Doom and Albert Wesker make an alliance with the greatest villains of both universes with the intention of seizing power. However, the course of their actions inadvertently awakens Galactus, a cosmic entity who intends to consume and destroy both worlds.

After the widespread conflict and disarray as a result of the merger, BSAA agent Chris Redfield finds himself in an ongoing conflict with an unknown sentient bioweapon known as the Hulk as it rampages through an unnamed city.[1]

Sometime later, Chris manages to track Wesker's whereabouts to a nearby TRICELL production facility. Where he discovers that Wesker has allied himself with the A.I.M. scientist known as M.O.D.O.K. Chris is joined by Sir Arthur and Laura Kinney who assist in disabling M.O.D.O.K, but are themselves easily overpowered and incapacitated by the sudden appearance of mutant Erik Lensherr, who has arrived to steal an experimental pathogen for use in his war against humankind.

Lensherr's ferrokinesis nearly causes the disabled M.O.D.O.K. to crash into Kinney and Redfield, but the two are rescued at the last second by the Hulk, who hesitantly allies himself with Redfield despite the pair's previous hostile encounters, taking Redfield aback momentarily. Lensherr succeeds in seizing the virus, much to Wesker's fury.[2] Wesker's goals would be further complicated during his confrontation with Jean Grey, and the unexpected arrival of Galactus.[3]

Thus, it is up to the heroes of the Marvel and Capcom universes to put aside their differences and end this evil before it is too late.

Chris' Ending[]

After defeating Galactus, Chris Redfield manages to defeat Wesker, bringing him to trial for his role in the Raccoon City Destruction Incident of 1998. Wesker is then seen constrained in a court room, prosecuted by attorney Matt Murdock.

In the Fate of Two Worlds version of the ending, Wesker quips that he "made quite a mess there" before attempting to break free of his restraints and attack the bailiff. However, he is quickly stopped as Chris intervenes and allows Murdock to continue with his opening statement.[4]

Deadpool's Ending[]

In the Fate of Two Worlds version of the ending, Chris is seen among the heroes present at Wade Wilson's party in Cleveland, Ohio, celebrating the defeat of Galactus. He was likely killed in the ensuing "Deadpoolicide" when Wilson drunkenly attempted to use the Power Cosmic to give a "little boost" to the DJ booth and margarita machine, thus accidentally blowing up much of the city.[5]

However, in the Ultimate version of the ending, the heroes present are swapped out for Deadpool's supporting cast from the comics and several oft-forgotten/joke characters from Capcom, with Chris being replaced with Captain Commando.[6]

Dormammu's Ending[]

After defeating Galactus, Dormammu turns his attention towards the "opportunities" to be had of other worlds in the multiverse. He creates a portal to the Capcom world where he is greeted by Lord Raptor, who stands alongside Akuma, Firebrand and Wesker as chosen heralds among "those connected to the Dark Arts" and await Dormammu to give the order to take both universes.[7]

However, in the Ultimate version of the ending, not only are Raptor, Akuma, Firebrand and Wesker now joined by Princess Devilotte, M. Bison, and Dr. Wily, but the group, led by Akuma, actively shuns Dormammu rather than welcoming him, telling him that he has no domain there and suggesting that the Capcom villains seek to protect their universe from his influence.[8]

Haggar's Ending[]

After defeating Galactus, Mike Haggar's political career skyrockets and he is elected as the 45th President of the United States alongside running mate Tony Stark. President-elect Haggar is soon visited in the Oval Office by his friends, Chris Redfield and Steve Rogers, who seek to check up on him due to the sudden pressures and responsibility now being placed upon him. Haggar shows his appreciation for their concern, but assures them that with the support and well-being of the people, he can't ever get tired.[9]

Hulk's Ending[]

After defeating Galactus, Hulk is seen working alongside Chris, clearing out a mansion facility not dissimilar to the Spencer Mansion, killing several "stupid frog creatures" and defeating Nemesis with ease. Upon entering the mansion's laboratory, Chris spots Wesker and informs Hulk to "go easy on him".[10]

Jill's Ending[]

After defeating Galactus, Jill is seen fighting alongside the half-vampire "daywalker" known as Blade, she notes that his heart-rate and blood pressure are abnormal, deducing that he isn't human, she questions what he is. Blade comments that she wouldn't believe him if he told her and tells her to focus on the fight, Jill hesitantly calls a truce as the two are surrounded by a host of monsters including Man-Thing, N'Kantu the Living Mummy, and Werewolf by Night. In the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ending, their encounter is far less hostile and Jill quips that she "thought she had it rough" just fighting zombies, Blade retorts that she "doesn't know the half of it".[11]

Nemesis' Ending[]

After defeating Galactus, Nemesis is seen sedated and floating in a containment tube. Oswell E. Spencer lauds the Director of the Weapon X program on the upgrade, although The Director states that they're nothing more than "minor enhancements". Nemesis is then seen with Adamantium claws emerging from it's hands.[12]

Rocket Raccoon's Ending[]

After defeating Galactus, Rocket decides to take the advice of "the guy with the guns" and vacations to Raccoon City, figuring the place would be a "paradise" for his kind. Rocket finds himself facing off against a horde of zombies, while wearing a polo shirt and sunglasses and remarks that "it's not".[13]

Ryu's Ending[]

In the Fate of Two Worlds version of the ending, Ryu enters a world fighting championship after defeating Galactus and faces off against the "Bloodsport of Madripoor", Iron Fist. A sign promoting the next battle in the tournament can be seen that pits Ken Masters against the T-103 known as "Mr. X".[14]

Wesker's Ending[]

After defeating Galactus, Wesker notes that his arrival allowed him to move forward with his own machinations unchallenged. Thus, he had managed to capture several weakened Marvel heroes including Captain America, Spider-Man and Phoenix. Due to their unique mutations, he plans on injecting them with Uroboros Virus and observing the results, noting that time will only tell if they will become the "next Alexia or Lisa Trevor".[15]

In the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 version of the ending, this line is replaced with Wesker stating that the heroes should yield zombies that the world would truly "marvel".[16]

Playable Characters[]

In addition to featuring characters from Marvel Comics and the Resident Evil series, the game features numberous characters from other Capcom franchises including Street Fighter, Mega Man, Darkstalkers, Ghosts N' Goblins, Devil May Cry, Strider, Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Dead Rising, Monster Hunter, Bionic Commando and Ace Attorney.

Connections to the Resident Evil franchise[]

Initially, only two playable characters represented Capcom's flagship Resident Evil franchise: Albert Wesker (voiced by D.C. Douglas and Jōji Nakata) and Chris Redfield (voiced by Roger Craig Smith and Hiroki Tōchi), with both serving as primary characters within the game's narrative.

The game also includes a level set in TRICELL laboratory that sees a contained T-002 and several Licker β, the latter of which can escape their enclosures and even be killed by the player. Upon death, the Lickers will leave behind usual drop items such as First Aid Spray, Green Herbs, Rifle ammo and Gold that cannot be picked up. The game's soundtrack features remixes of Majini Ⅴ and Wind Of Madness to accompany each character in-game. Likewise, Chris and Wesker each utilize several moves and weapons used within Resident Evil 5, although strangely, Chris' default pistol is the Kendo custom-produced Silver Ghost from Resident Evil 4 instead of the M92F.

On March 15, 2011, a month after the game's release, Jill Valentine (voiced by Kari Wahlgren and Atsuko Yuya) became available as downloadable content, with a remix of Sad but true serving as her in-game theme. Several months later in November, an overhauled and expanded edition of the game entitled Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 was released, this introduced the Nemesis T-Type as the fourth and final playable Resident Evil character with a remix of Unstoppable Nemesis serving as it's in-game theme. Finally, on December 19, A free DLC for Ultimate was released, featuring Claire Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy and HUNK as cards within the new "Heroes and Heralds" mode, giving the player various special abilities, such as parrying, speed increases, armored assists, etc.

Outside of the playable roster, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 introduces the concepts of Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, the P30 device, Beretta 92F Custom 'Samurai Edge', MercWorx Goliath knife, Smith & Wesson Model 29 magnum, Ithaca M37 shotgun, Škorpion vz. 61 submachine gun, RPG-7, Milkor MGL Mk.1, Stun Rod, Incendiary Grenade, Proximity Bomb, and the Shango Satellite Laser, the Mansion Incident, the Spencer Estate, Raccoon City, the Uroboros Virus, Barry Burton, Excella Gionne, Ricardo Irving, Lisa Trevor, Sheva, Alexia, the T-103 and the Umbrella Corporation to the lore of Earth-30847.
