It was confirmed recently that The Lion King live-action will be getting a sequel following on from 2019's movie. While there's little information actually known about the film at this point, there has certainly been a lot of talk due to how popular this Disney franchise is, with the animated version being considered one of Disney's greatest.

With the live-action being met with very mixed reviews upon its release, there's certainly a lot that people want to see and want Disney to avoid here. Without the pressure of having to tell the original, classic story, there's a lot of opportunities to really tell a strong story, but there are certain pitfalls that should be avoided.

Want To See: The World Expanded

Pride Rock

So far, The Lion King world has very much been set in the same area of Pride Rock in every version of the film. Even when they branch out, to where Timon and Pumbaa can be found things are similar and not fully explored. Therefore in a sequel, it would be good to see more of the world in the surrounding area.

Taking the story to a new location would make things slightly less predictable, and would also create a brand new backdrop for the film, which would help it stand-alone, unique from the other movies from this world.

Don't Want: Repeated Songs

CGI Simba in The Lion King (2016)

When it came to The Lion King live-action, the songs were ready-made and already slotted into the movie perfectly. Everyone knew that the songs were amazing, as that's a huge part of why the animated film was so great, but it is crucial that Disney doesn't slip into just having the same songs repeated.

Now is the time for Disney to get incredibly creative and make something brand new when it comes to the music. It's obviously crucial for the film to have songs, it is time for Disney to make something totally fresh and have some new classics.

Want To See: Explain Rafiki

The Lion King 2019 Rafiki

Rafiki is an odd character from The Lion King. He's one of very few that isn't given a big backstory and his personality isn't quite fleshed out like some of the others are. However, he clearly is very wise and has a real connection to Mufasa and his family.

It would be nice in the sequel to see some form of backstory on this character and explain the background that he comes from. Because he plays such an influential role, it would be good to know more about why he does, plus, Rafiki is a fun character and more of him can't be a bad thing, right?

Don't Want: Simba's Pride/Lion King 1 1/2

The Lion King Simba's Pride

While The Lion King live-action obviously followed the same storyline as the original animation, Disney really has the opportunity to tell new stories with this one. However, there are two sequels that already exist in the animated versions with The Lion King 2: Simbas Pride, and The Lion King 3 (or 1 1/12 as it is also known.)

Even though those stories are quite interesting and fun, it would be better if Disney didn't go down the route of just copying them in live-action form. This should be an original story that tells something completely new and unique, which is what people want to see from these live-action films.

Want To See: Make Nala The Lead

Feel The Love Tonight

A great way to provide a change of pace to the sequel would be making Nala the lead character and expanding on her story and personality. She's always been a great character in the glimpses that have been showcased, but now is the right time to strike on showing more.

Whether it's going back to the start and telling things from her perspective in flashbacks, or showing the next phase of the story with her in the lead and Simba as the support, it would be a fun change of pace to make the film standout.

Don't Want: Music For Selling Singles

The Lion King

One big issue that came from The Lion King live-action was the fact that many of the great songs seemed to be twisted and focused heavily on the actual music and vocals themselves. This was particularly clear with Beyonce, with Disney pushing to make the song a great hit, rather than delivering on the emotional aspect of the film.

The songs don't need to just be put in to potentially sell singles or make big hits, they need to be packed full of emotion, heart, and personality in order to actually impact the film. That's what made the original animation so impressive and is what a sequel needs to have.

Want To See: More Emotion

Mufasa Remade

Following on from that point, a big issue with the live-action movie was the sheer lack of emotion that the characters were able to bring. A lot of that is down to the photorealism of the characters, and they just didn't convey the same level of love, hate, and other core emotions that made the original animated film so strong.

While it's going to be hard to tweak that because of the live-action element of the movie, Disney needs to figure out a manner of getting the emotions into the characters to make this film really stand out and help the characters become stronger overall.

Don't Want: Scar's Return

Scar from The Lion King live-action

Scar is an incredible villain from Disney's history, but that doesn't mean he needs to return for the sequel. There is no doubt a good story to be told by having Scar come back to cause havoc, but it would be better to create something totally fresh.

If Disney can create a different villain with a compelling backstory, they have the chance of adding another brilliant character. Plus, this would loosen the need to rely on the animated classic, which is something that really needs to happen.

Want To See: More Timon & Pumbaa

Timon and Pumbaa

Timon and Pumbaa have always been two of the greatest Disney sidekicks as they bring so much humor and heart to the story. However, that was really clear in the live-action film as they really were the best characters in the entire movie.

It would be smart for Disney to push on that and have even more of them featured throughout the entire movie from start to finish. Giving them a key storyline would be a really enjoyable part of the movie that would help make the whole film more uplifting.

Don't Want: A Dark Storyline

The Lion King

Something that several of the Disney live-action movies have done is taken a really dark twist on characters such as with the Sleeping Beauty world and with Alice in Wonderland. While seeing that twist every now and then is fun, that doesn't quite suit The Lion King world.

There's no doubt that there has to be some elements of darkness throughout, particularly with whatever character is the villain. However, it is crucial that Disney doesn't go too far with it as has happened in other films.
