In Resort To Love, the new Netflix romantic comedy that began streaming today, Christina Milian has just gotten out of a serious relationship and is at a low point in her career, when she finds herself whisked away to a beautiful location where she ultimately falls in love with a hunky man. If that sounds familiar, you might be thinking of Falling Inn Love, the 2019 Netflix movie where Christina Milian—having just gotten out of a serious relationship and at a low point in her career—is whisked away to another beautiful location where she ultimately falls in love with a different hunky man.

No disrespect intended—Milian has clearly found her niche in these hotel-based Netflix romantic comedies with wordplay titles. And as it turns out, the former pop star is a perfect fit for these charming, slightly goofy leading lady roles. In Resort To Love, Milian plays an aspiring pop star named Erica who’s just been dumped by her fiancé (Jay Pharoah) and dealt a major blow to her music career. So she reluctantly takes a singing gig at a luxury resort on a tropical island.

At first, Erica is so heartbroken that she can’t even sing “The Time Of My Life,” at a strangers’ wedding without breaking down in tears. Milian is genuinely hilarious in this scene, perfecting the art of comedic off-key singing in the way only an actually talented singer can. After screaming the chorus on her hands and knees, through her tears she shouts at the newly wedded couple, “You look so good! I love this dress on you! It’s so good. Don’t leave her!”

Milian is not afraid to make herself the butt of the joke, which, of course, only makes her all the more lovable. And she gets her redemption soon after when she sings Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” complete with platform heels, a sparkly purple bell-bottom jumpsuit, and a ’70s style blonde afro wig. It should look ridiculous, but instead, it looks fabulous. It helps that Milian—known for her early 2000s hits like “AM to PM” and “When You Look at Me”—sounds so good, while she sings a song that represents Erica’s healing journey. Despite the fact that I was aware I was watching a silly Netflix movie with a silly premise, watching Milian move on from her ex and find her inner peace felt genuinely empowering.

Milian played a similar character in Falling Inn Love: a woman named Gabriela Diaz who is tasked with fixing up a dilapidated New Zealand inn after she wins it in an inn-winning contest. If you missed that one, just know that Milian is full of the same self-deprecating, dorky charm, from screaming over the surprise critters in her inn to jamming out to Freak Nasty’s “Da’ Dip.”

Both Resort To Love and Falling Inn Love were filmed on location in the Republic of Mauritius and New Zealand respectively. Falling Inn Love was a hit, and while the success of Resort To Love remains to be seen, it feels like Netflix has found a winning formula by sending Christina Milian to a remote location and pairing her with a handsome man to smooch. (Sinqua Walls in Resort to Love, and Adam Demos in Falling Inn Love.) It’s so simple, yet so effective. I would watch five more movies with that exact premise, and personally, I can’t wait to see where Milian gets shipped off to next.
