We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

This song is excellent. Might take a few times on repeat to truly appreciate the song. Sounds alot better than the teaser and then the snippet during the film trailer. Not the best album in my opinion. But it will grow on you. But from recording the whole album in a garage onto tape, that is what makes the Foo Fighters the best band in the world.
You don't think the album is too hot? I personally think its fantastic. Easily one of their best, if not their best. Definitely the most consistent.

I think the song might be about someone who made up a bunch of excuses and lies and now those things have caught up to him. And now that every knows, his excuses and lies are now leaving him with no where to go. Only the terror of knowing everyone is now out to get him.

Bahahaha, you like The Pretender? By far one of the worst Foo Fighters songs. Now, In Your Honor that was a great Opener. One of their worst? Apparently you don't know that The Pretender is one of, if not, THE, biggest/most popular song they've ever done.
By the most of the lyrics I think that it's about destroying a relation between two people (friends, lovers..) so by saying "your bridges are burning" it means that the bond that connects the two is disappearing, and "gathering the ashes" means that one of them is trying to save that relationship but it's not working so he says "everything is thrown away". And now returning to the begining "these are my famous last words" probably means that these words are the last thing someone would say to his partner before breaking up. Anyways that's just my interpretation of the song, btw it's the best opener.
Mightyquinn, just because a band is hard and heavy does not mean Jesus can't come into the equation. The Bible is probably the heaviest piece of writing ever concieved, dealing with issues such as the ETERNAL SALVATION OF HUMANITY. Heavy subject matter... Anyway, Black Sabbath were not Christian, yet their song After Forever deals with the worlds denial of Jesus and redemption in a negative light. It seems in Bridges Burning, the Foos have taken a leaf out of the Black Sabbath book. Society is burning the bridges between itself and God, and some of the imagery in this song, such as the "test of faith" and "king of second chances" suggest that this is what the song is about. Even if the Foos aren't Christian. Brilliant stuff.
I agree here and disagree with the previous post. I don't think I have ever heard one of their songs that trashes anyone's faith, including Christianity. If anything, a lot of their songs are very spiritual. Wheter Dave curses his ass off at cocnert, drinks whiskey, and might have smoked a bowl or two has nothing to do with whether he belives in God, is a Christain, or is spiritual, despite everyone wanting to label people of faith as hypocrites if their behavior does not accord with the critic's view of how they are supposed to act, etc. How about when he says "Hook me up a new evolution cause this one is a lie...." in Learn to Fly? Sounds pretty direct to me. He also talks about angels in that song.
You know what I don't go to church on a sunday or nothin' but I would have to agree with you for the best part.

I believe this is about a crooked person that is very selfish all out for his own gain. Hes like a salesman that sells you a lemon. He keeps burning his bridges, because eventually people find out they have a lemon! But the power he receives is the money he gains. Which in turn are what keeps him warm at night. All his bridges are burning down. Eventually there will be no one left to sell his lemons too!
