Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these phrases indicates a strong desire to travel?

Answer: itchy feet

To have itchy feet is to have a strong desire to move from one's present situation and travel or relocate to a new place or position. It can be a literal desire to physically travel or a somewhat figurative meaning such as a desire to change jobs. It has a sense of being accompanied by a sense of restlessness. One of the earliest uses of the phrase is from a poem called "De Propah Kind" by Will F. Griffin in the August 27, 1906 issue of "The Baltimore Sun":
"Ah don't keer fer de flowahs o'er yander smellin' sweet,
De country road don't tease me nor give me itchy feet".

8. In a monopoly there is a single seller of some commodity or service. What economic term describes a single buyer controlling the market?

Answer: Monopsony

The word "monopoly" dates to the early 16th century, from the Greek "monos" (single, alone) and "polein" (to sell). A duopoly (Latin, "duo", two) and an oligopoly (Greek, "oligos", little or small) refer to situations where there are two sellers or a small group of sellers (known as a cartel if they collude). Economically, competition sees higher output, lower costs and cheaper prices. In a monopsony (Greek, "opsonia", purchase), there is a single buyer controlling the market and this may (or probably will) influence prices. The "monopsony" term was first used by economist Joan Robinson in her book "The Economics of Imperfect Competition" (1933) where she credited scholar Bertrand Hallward with its origin.
