Alpena History
The area that is now known as Alpena was originally inhabited by Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. They lived here until the white settlers arrived in the early 1830s. Alpena was a lumbering center with vast timber stands and many rivers. The area was incorporated as a city in 1871.
