      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

An ambitious mix of genres, Vanilla Sky collapses into an incoherent jumble. Cruise's performance lacks depth, and it's hard to feel sympathy for his narcissistic character.

Shioka O Almost feels like seeing a comic book story. It's superficial but actually complexed and challenging. Cast is too big... could be better. I'll check the original Spanish one. Entertaining soundtrack. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review John S Rambling, overlong, occasionally interesting, quasi sci-fi character study featuring Tom Cruise as a has it all brat tycoon who winds up disfigured. Or has he? Is it all a dream he is creating from a cryogenically frozen limbo? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Pedro L It's a confusing movie, at first I didn't understand it's history, at one point you think it's a romantic movie, but then you realize why they've made this way, I'm not a big fan of it, but the soundtrack is awesome, I really liked the 2 Radiohead songs at the movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Pasquale u I watched this movie when I was in a sad place. It blew my mind and made me think about what makes me happy. Probably my favorite movie of all time and I've seen it 10 times. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Paul G One of the best films of it's time. This movie should be much higher rated. It was original and beautiful. The sadness of this movie is profound. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Francisco C Ambitious and good story to follow. Leaves you the aftertaste of a good story you need more from. Sadly, it lacked the vision of something more digestible for the regular viewer. You might need to watch it twice, as it has aged beautifully, like a good wine. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader I now find Cruise tolerable only when he's in a movie that undercuts or ridicules his narcissism--as Eyes Wide Shut did and as this movie does even more noticeably. Feb 26, 2019 Full Review Christy Lemire Associated Press Vanilla Sky is nearly identical to the 1997 Spanish film it's based on, except it's set in Manhattan instead of Madrid and has a much better soundtrack. Oct 25, 2018 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Some surface appeal, but ultimately vacant. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2010 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine If the star and director are (kind of) worrying about the same middle-age falloff, Crowe’s specific fears are more compelling to me and responsible for what, intellectually, is the movie’s most fascinating idea. Nov 29, 2022 Full Review Stephen Silver Tilt Magazine Doesn't make any more sense now than it did in 2001 (29th anniversary) Rated: 2/5 Dec 31, 2021 Full Review Peter Canavese Celluloid Dreams Likable and ambitious with great John Toll visuals. You want it to succeed but it doesn't always quite get there. (4K restoration Paramount Presents blu-ray review). Rated: 3/4 Nov 26, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
