How It Works: Motion-Dampening Chains & Springs eliminate the need for sway bars
|
|
|
|
---|---|---|---|
Traditional Weight Distribution Sway BarsTraditional weight distribution hitches utilize a spring bar system. As the spring bars are lifted, the leverage pushes the tow vehicle’s weight towards the front axle. |
Disadvantage: Unnecessary BounceHowever, after going through a dip, the spring bar can act like a diving board—loading and releasing kinetic energy, causing the truck and trailer to continue to bounce. |
Andersen Weight Distribution HitchThe Andersen Weight Distribution Hitch efficiently shifts the tow vehicle’s weight forward towards the front axle (without any lifting). |
Advantage: Motion-Dampening Eliminates BounceThe chains and patented motion-dampening springs resist bounce by pulling at the right-angle to the up and down movement, eliminating unnecessary bounce. |
How It Works: Sway control auto-adjusts to tongue load weight
The sway control in the ball housing system self-adjusts to tongue load—meaning the heavier the load the greater the sway control. We recommend at least 300 lbs on the tongue to allow the mechanism to be able to provide anti-sway using the friction material in the housing.
- With the coupler attached to the Tapered Ball, there's no need for grease. The ball connects to anti-sway plate, integrating the motion-dampening chain & spring system.
- The Friction Cone is a brake-like material that works with the tapered ball and ball housing to eliminate sway. The friction between the tapered ball and housing allows the hitch to “self-adjust” according to the tongue weight.
- The Anti-Sway Ball Housing securely holds the tapered ball and friction cone in place. The two holes allow for height adjustment on the adjustment rack

I came across this WDH when I was dead set on having the dealer install a Blue Ox Sway Pro on our new to us Rockwood 8313SS when we took delivery. I fell in love with the engineering and simplicity of the design. It made a whole lot more sense in my head than the big, old, more traditional WDH's. As I always do though, I thoroughly researched the product through the magic of Google. I quickly saw that there was a fair amount of skepticism that the product does not work for heavy TT or at least those with heavy TW. (By the way, learned a ton more about abbreviations such as TT/TW/WDH/GVWR....) Our TT is about ~6500lbs dry with a TW of ~800lbs. When the dealer told me they were not an authorized dealer of Andersen Hitches, I asked them "why not", it seems like an awesome hitch. They just said that it doesn't seem beefy enough and that I should reconsider their Blue Ox. I sent off a couple of panic questions to the customer service email that I found on their website on a weekend, thinking that there was no way they would get back to me till Monday, too late to order it from Amazon and have it for the scheduled pick up date of our first TT. I received a detailed and clearly explained answer from Andersen later that afternoon. It was clear that their customer service was great. I purchased the product with no doubts in my mind that it was going to be great.
It was delivered on time and packaged well. We put the box in our 1500 series Suburban and headed off a week later to pick up our monstrosity of a TT, (which is probably 200lbs away from our max tow weight without much in it) We had an extremely stressful afternoon taking delivery, finding out that Camping World of Hanover PA is not the most honest of RV companies. They placed the trailer in a location where I could apply the hitch myself and said "good luck". I was tired and ready to go home, also knowing that it was about to get dark and colder than it already was. I am a pretty handy guy so installing the Andersen hitch was pretty straight forward and simple. Only hiccup was relocating the break away wiring box, which took all of 5 min. Once hooked up, I was amazed at how simple it was and how well it looked. We cautiously drove a half mile to Walmart before our 2 hour drive home to test the system and make any adjustments in the parking lot. It worked perfectly right from the get go. Our ride home was awesome! Almost no sway, even from big rigs going the opposite way on 2 lane highways. Handled well and most of all I felt confident driving it. I began to wonder if the stickers were right about the dry and loaded loads on the TT. I hope that this review is helpful. I know reading the countless others that are on Amazon helped me to make my decision. I conclude that those that are distrusting or have a negative review of the product either A never owned one and/or saw it in person or B they put it on incorrectly thinking it should be like every other WDH when they purchased it and did not ask for additional installation tips from the customer service oriented company they bought it from.
If you want a great quality product made by a company that stands behind its product I would highly recommend Andersen WDH's.

Installation of the Andersen hitch was straight forward. I did end up buying a chain extension kit to move my brackets a little further back on my trailer to clear some obstructions, but there is lots of "flexibility" when it comes to installation and placement in order to get everything set up based on how your trailer is constructed.
Once fully installed, hooked up, and adjusted, my trailer was very level and my rear bumper on my truck (2021 F150 Lariat 4x4. Crew crab, 6.5' bed) dropped less than an inch with the trailer fully loaded. I did tow the loaded trailer about 140 miles round trip and the system exhibited no sway or suck on the highway (which my bar system did have some), and significantly reduced the noise problem. Making the turn onto my street no longer wakes up my neighbors or scares people when I arrive at the track.
Top reviews from other countries
The hitch was much quieter then my old hitch and drive with the trailer was nice. 95% of my sway issues disappeared. We drove down the Oregon coast and from Vancouver BC to Yellowstone. Only issue we had was on our second last day on the I90 we had strong gusting winds near the gorge. I could feel the trailer trying to move and the hitch continuously brought it under control. Overall I love the drive with the hitch and feel much safer.
We have now been using for a season and just started out with our 1st trip in our second season, While the hitch continued to work great, it did start making a loud noise. I reached back out to Jared and within an hour he had the replacement part in transit to my house to arrive a couple days later. The customer service from Andersen has just been outstanding. issues can happen and I rate companies on how they deal, Andersen gets an A+++
I feel that the Andersen WDH 'saved our bacon'!
