Created for all global citizens, this universally respected volume of world maps has been completely revised and updated with fascinating visualizations of international trends and global conditions.

National Geographic's flagship
Atlas of the World, now in its 11th edition, provides authoritative maps of every country, ocean, and region of the world, as well as thematic maps and accompanying graphics showing important population, environmental, and economic patterns. Organized by continent and reflecting today's political boundaries and identities, this authoritative atlas is an indispensable reference for schools and libraries, as well as the latest resource for home browsing and study. A thematically organized opening section uses current data to visualize urgent concerns, such as Earth's last wild places, changing freshwater availability, human migration and refugee movement, and human rights conditions globally. The back of the book contains basic facts and flags of every country, as well as a comprehensive index cross-referencing more than 150,000 place names. A thought-provoking foreword by Alexander M. Tait, The Geographer of National Geographic, begins the book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“If you’re going to buy just one atlas this fall, make it the 11th edition of the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ATLAS OF THE WORLD (National Geographic, $215), a 7.8-pound behemoth that’s a foot and a half long and a foot wide. Its mammoth size allows you to appreciate the details in its dozens of maps — satellite maps, cultural maps and physical maps, all of them striking. The best one, “Life on a Warming Planet,” lays out where temperatures are rising (and by how much), where permafrost is melting, what nations emit the most carbon dioxide and which large cities are at high risk.” –The New York TImes

11th edition has some welcome changes, others not welcome compared to 10th edition.
I have been collecting NG Atlas of the World since the 6th edition. My over-all favorite was the 8th edition, which had the best mix of non-thematic atlas sections, including a nice section on cities. The current 11th edition has some incremental changes compared to the 10th edition, not all of them good.I won't go into microscopic detail, but NG has placed much emphasis on the thematic sections at the front of the atlas. Of course, these have been updated, but in my opinion the topics have been largely simplified or "dumbed down" - which seems to be the current educational trend. This goes along with NG's increasing emphasis on politics, which was the reason I quit subscribing to NG magazine. Nevertheless, there is a lot of good info in the thematic section.Unfortunately, the physical and political map section - which is the heart of the product - has taken a step backwards. In particular, the physical maps now seem to be based primarily on elevation rather than land appearance (see attached photo of United States physical map, with 10th edition at top and 11th edition at bottom). The new format seems like something you would see in a "juvenile" atlas. As for the political maps, there are some questionable changes. For example, there are no longer "Amazon Region", "British Isles", or Asia-Pacific" maps. Hawaii now occupies a single page instead of the beautiful two-page spread in the 10th edition. The New Guinea map has been eliminated and there are other similar changes. Borders are lighter-colored and do not stand out as well as previous editions. On the other hand, Africa, especially central Africa, has been expanded, and the moon and Mars maps are lighter and easier to read. Also a new "Cosmic Journeys" page has been added. The oceans section has more attractive maps (photo).Verdict: The 11th edition is good, but if you are more interested in maps than up-to-date thematic material, get the 10th edition.

I really love it. Very easy to use starting with the index. It's very big, which I wanted, but I didn't take into account how heavy it would be on my lap. I would have to use at a table, and I want to use it while watching documentaries, etc. I do love it though - keeping forever.

It's sad Disney has purchased the NG, many of their first-class products have been discontinued. This atlas is one of the things not now produced. NG's maps, descriptions and publications were 1st class. I do not think current management of Disney is up to the task of keeping alive the 100 years plus of the organization. This atlas is the best one produced by anyone period. If you can get a copy, this is the one to have. There is a warm feeling of opening and page turning a real book, it's a wonderful thing to have this atlas.

I've always found these National Geographic World Atlases to be the best around! It's a "Big" book. You will need to sit at a table or roomy desk when you consult it. But the maps are THE BEST and the indexes and other "Data" just wonderful to have at your fingertips!

When I ordered the National Geographic World Atlas I didn't stop to think about size. It is huge; about 18 inches tall, and at least 11 inches wide. And it's heavy. What I like most about it are: 1. The detail: many small towns that are often not named in some other atlases are shown. 2. The paper is high quality and sturdy. 3. Each country, and states in the USA, are shown on two sheets that face each other and are numbered as one page. 4. It has its own ribbon bookmark which really helps when you have to switch back and forth from the index to a map. 5. The vast amount it contains about the land masses and the open seas, the planet itself, and the space around us is incredible. 6. The table of contents itself shows the thoroughness given to each aspect of our world and its inhabitants. 7, And I think the cost is low, considering its high value.

My dad always taught me to love maps and atlases and this does not disappoint. We are now getting ready for several overseas trips in the years to come and we realized we could use a large, detailed world atlas. This large format reference weighs over 10 lbs and opens to 18” X 22”. Kind of big for a coffee table so I built a nice library stand to complement its beauty and utility. For travelers, it has reference sections for time zones, topography, climate and even astronomical charts for skies all over the world. For academics, there are references for geology, history, sociology and more. It’s beautifully bound with heavy weight paper pages and beautiful printing. Highly recommended.

Very nice atlas, high quality information and maps. Certainly superior to the Oxford Atlas. One slight concern was that there appears to have been an issue with the binding and some pages in the book that slightly stuck together, additionally, corners of some pages appear to have been lightly creased. The book was sealed in its box so I can only assume this happened during production. Despite these minor issues , it is still a great product and I’m happy with my purchase.

I wanted this book as a backup copy to a smaller one that I use as this is so large and heavy but on the plus side it has all the information I would need for a detailed perusal. You need a large desk for this book which I don't have but still, it is a very good book. Greg

Firstly I must say that this is big, really big, the exact measurements are in description but I didn't expect to be that big, so there is no chance to stay upright in any bookshelf, flat is the only solution.
About the content is what you would expect for a 100£ book. A lot of content, big maps and tons of information to digest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Atlante National Geographic: undicesima edizione
Reviewed in Italy on March 15, 2021
Ero in possesso, da circa una ventina d'anni, dell'ottava edizione del National Geographic Atlas of the World.
