Capra Demon is a Boss in Dark Souls.

Capra Demon Information

The Capra Demon is the boss of the Lower Undead Burg. You can get to him either by going left, down to the end of the main street (past the Undead Assassins and Undead Dogs), or by going through the shortcut in the waterway in the Firelink Shrine after you unlock it.

This boss is highly susceptible to fire, therefore, any variation of the Firebomb or a Charcoal Pine Resin-coated weapon, will go a long way.

This particular boss is later found in packs, in the Demon Ruins, where they can be farmed for a decent amount of souls, and potentially, their weapon. See more below.

Attacks

Horizontal Swing

The Capra Demon uses horizontal swings, with his Demon Great Machetes, that are fairly easy to see coming due to the wind up. After the wind up they will quickly swing, however it is possible to dodge in between swings quite easily, even with a medium roll speed. Usually used in succession, 2-3 times in a row.

Double Machete Swing

Quite frequently the Capra Demon will line his Machetes up together, as if he was two handing a greater demon great machete, making a powerful two handed swing. This attack is best avoided since it will easily break guard and deal extra damage, this is one of his easiest attacks to see coming since he takes the time to put his weapons together then wind up the swing.

Machete Slam

Another attack of the Capra Demon is a jumping attack, slamming his weapons down. This can be fairly easily dodged; when doing this attack he does leap roughly a weapons length forwards so be wary. It can break guards quite easily and hits very hard, the attack actually is fairly quick, all things considered. Whenever just outside of the Capra's reach, he has a good chance of doing this attack to close the space. If he is able to land this attack, the player is slammed into the ground, leaving them stunned for a short period of time however are invulnerable during this period.

Attack Dogs

The Undead Dogs in this arena are a serious threat to the player, as dealing with the two of them and the Capra Demon simultaneously, can land you in some very sticky situations. They will move swiftly to rush the player, attempting to get in quick hits, and stagger the player, for the Capra Demon to capitalize on. Their bites and swings will inflict bleed damage on the player so it is advised to block every strike, even if their normal damage can be tanked.

Stagger

While not exactly an attack, any enemy that falls atop the player will stagger the character. With this in mind, if the Capra falls from above on the stairs and onto the player it will deal a bit of damage, a very minute amount, but this will leave the player open to one of the Capra Demon's more dangerous attacks.

Tips

  • You can summon help, right outside the boss fog gate, although, it takes a few moments for your support to arrive once you've crossed the fog gate.
  • After killing the dogs, it's possible to run halfway up the steps and get the demon stuck on the side of the staircase. Lob some firebombs and its over. Also making yourself lighter makes it easier to dodge.
  • Using Iron Flesh will make this an easy fight as he can barely damage you.
  • The boss can be staggered, much like the normal enemy versions by using heavy weaponry (Zweihander, Claymore etc...)
  • If you have a decent poise and a weapon dealing about 300 damage, you can just enter the area and start swinging. The demon will hit you once or twice, but will die before it can kill you.
  • You can do a plunging attack if you are going up the stairs and he is coming to the base of the stairs. This can be a good way to do quick damage.
  • He will do his heavy attack only if you are far from him. run towards the Capra as soon as you enter the room to avoid immediately being hit by this attack and do not run too far from him during the fight. This will help a lot.

Capra Demon farming

Additional groups of Capra Demons can be found in Demon Ruins. Once you've beaten Ceaseless Discharge and the lava lake has hardened, there is an area on the far right of the lava lake, with several Capra Demons. If you manage to make it past all of them and to the bonfire below them, you can rest and then kill the demon closest to the bonfire, over and over again (if it's easy for you). If you die, you spawn right there so there's no need to venture a great distance to retrieve your stuff. It can be a long process but it can also be effective for gaining decently easy experience and possibly their Demon Great Machete. Like many demons, these are very susceptible to poison arrows, and can be killed at range with just a few poisoned arrows, if one has the patience.

Strategy 1

Upon entering, be prepared to be immediately attacked by all three enemies. Circle around to the right (dodge the boss's first big swing) and run up the stairs on the left side of the arena, the dogs should follow you; take your opportunity and kill them to make this battle a lot more bearable. However if they don't follow, try to lure them up - this will most likely lure the boss as well.

Killing the dogs quickly is critical to winning this fight as it is entirely too easy for them to stunlock you until the Capra Demon lands a killing blow. If he follows you up the stairs before the dogs are dead, feel free to drop down and get a bit of distance from him and make another attempt.

Strategy 1a - Mano-a-Mano

Once the dogs are dead, back up along the narrow stone bridge at the top of the stairs. Don't go all the way to the wall, because the boss will crowd you up there. He may not hit you there, but it can be dangerous so remember to guard. If you are not all the way at the wall, he should jump from the stairs and miss entirely. From here, you can perform a plunging attack (RB + above enemy) on him from the stairs to do some very decent damage and make your battle easier. From here, there are two sub-strategies to employ:

  1. The best thing to do after you've gotten the is lure the boss all the way to the top of the stairs. Guard with your shield and wait for him to swing a few times and get really close to you. Then you can get in a few swings with your weapon before he falls off. If you fall off with him, run back up to the top of the stairs. Rinse and repeat until he dies.
  2. If you feel like going toe-to-toe, just keep a close eye on his attacks. The two-sword swing can't be blocked entirely but can be easily evaded and you may be able to get a hit off before he recovers. His leaping attack is also useful for getting in a hit or two; if you're at close range and manage to slip to the side his back will be to you.

Strategy 1b - Plunge & Repeat

Also as above, run right so that you are standing on the narrow shelf. Try to stand in the middle of the ledge, and keep in mind that the demon may follow you. If he comes up, when he gets onto the ledge with you, drop down and run. In most cases the demon will drop down after a couple seconds and attempt to follow you. However, if you run back up the stairs as the demon is dropping, it will (ideally) turn and try to face you, becoming "stuck" for a moment as it attempts to maintain its targeting.

As you run back up, the demon may attack but will most likely miss, as it will be aiming for a spot behind and below you. Be ready to block anyway. Once on the ledge again the demon will be right below you, vulnerable to a plunging attack (RB + above enemy), just like the strategy earlier, only this time, you rinse and repeat this to make short work of the boss.

Strategy 2 - Tank

Strategy Preparations

  • SHIELD, unlike the two above strategies which rely on mobility and running up the stairs, this strategy relies on having a good shield with the highest stability you can manage. By this point in the game, you should be able to obtain a fairly good shield - the three best options at this point, being the Black Knight Shield (if the odds were in your favor for a Black Knight drop), the Balder Shield (which you can farm from Balder Knights in the Undead Parish), and the Caduceus Kite Shield (which you can buy from Andre of Astora). Whichever of these you can find, choose whichever one you can get to have the highest Stability (upgraded to +5, the Balder Shield is better than the Caduceus Kite Shield, but not by a lot, and if you have found enough Twinkling Titanite to get the Black Knight Shield to +3, it beats out the other two).
  • ARMOR, the heaviest you can find. The Stone Knight Set is good - if you've already visited Darkroot Garden - otherwise, just equip the heaviest, most physically-defensive armor you can; for this strategy, you want to pretty much stand still at the fog door, so mobility really isn't necessary - but defense and poise can keep you alive if you don't manage to block an attack in time.
  • RINGS, the best choices are probably the Ring of Favor and Protection  and the Blue Tearstone Ring; these should help to keep you alive. While Havel's Ring will give you improved mobility, that isn't the point of this strategy.
  • WEAPON, the Drake Sword is probably the best option, but if you've found anything that does more damage that you can effectively one-hand, use it. Ideally, you want to be able to kill a demon dog in one swing or else they can overwhelm your guard.

So, now that you're ready, here's what you do:

Enter the fog door, raise your shield and stand still; the Capra Demon should start running at you, as well as the Undead Dog at the top of the stairs. The second one will actually remain in its little alcove unless you run farther into the area, so stand your ground.

Block the Capra Demon's first attack and the first Dog's first lunge - they should come within about a second of each other - then take the opportunity to kill off the Undead Dog. Now, you should be able to tank everything the boss can throw at you.

Keep on the defensive! If the boss is attacking, keep your shield up! If he's not attacking, lower your shield so your stamina recharges faster. Keep a close eye on his attack patterns and learn when to block and when to lower your shield; you shouldn't have any problem tanking his attacks if you remember to lower your shield when he's not attacking. If you cannot manage your stamina bar for this fight, you WILL run out of stamina and he WILL break your guard. Once you've learned his attack patterns, wait for an opportunity to attack between his swings. Remember, though, that attacking also drains your stamina, so only attack if he gives you an opportunity AND you will have the stamina afterwards to block his attacks.

  • Keep doing this until he's dead - then you can waddle (running just doesn't describe how you move in heavy armor) farther into the area and kill the second Undead Dog.

Strategy 3 - Cheesebombs

The Capra Demon can be beaten without actually stepping into the boss arena. If you have a bow, and a few firebombs you can take it down with ease. You stand against a wall on the bridge just before the Capra Demon's fog gate, and push as far into the corner as you can. Aim your bow above the boss arena at the 3rd (from the left ) battlement off in the distance. Proceed to throw firebombs before resetting. Should only you take you 3 goes at it, and on the final go you can throw a fifth one and it will still hit.
You need:

Strategy 4 - Sniper

Upon entering the boss arena make your way past the dogs to the staircase (rolling to avoid getting smashed by the Capra demon’s first attack). At the top of the staircase you can walk across the big stone archway and bunker down in that corner. Once there you can easily dispatch the dogs and begin chipping away at the demon with a bow. He can step onto the archway and swing at you before he falls off but his attacks should just go over your head. He can also stand at the top of the staircase and leap at you which can rarely hit you. This is an easy way to cheese the fight and you only need:

  • A bow (any kind that you can use)
  • About 100 arrows (may take more or less depending on your damage output)

I don't get the hate for this boss. Playing the remaster. Beat Elden Ring but this is my first DS playthough. Beat him first time powerstancing a +4 morningstar. Literally roll when you come in, go up stairs and overhead swing on dogs. Then plunge boss over and over. EZ. The butterfly was harder tbh. Git good

Miyazaki was like: lets make a f*cking tiny arena, add two shitty dogs, and a bossss with two biig swords... incredible!!!!

This boss is revolutionary! Now we can have a screen sized boss placed in a office cubicle ass arena and add two dogs for good measure

Here I thought I was going to Lordran to ignite the Flame but then this Omenkiller from the Lands Between showed up and decided to turn the Undead Burg into the Albinauric village, he even brought his dogs with him… Needless to say, I think Sir Gideon is looking for a pasty looking synthetic lady with a wolf obsession around these parts.

There’s always so much salt anytime people are defeated by a boss, whining and complaining about how this or that isn’t fair and it’s the games fault they died. These people seemingly fail to realize that a large part of the game is death and your not expected to survive the entirety of the game on your first life. The whole point is to overcome the odds by become more skillful and wise, then to have the satisfaction and accomplishment of truly besting your opponents fairly through great effort. When you get angry and give up or cheese that is you going hollow.

Remember his name, when you face an annoying mob gank in any other Souls game. He's the one who started it all. Smiling down on us from heavens with his doggos.

                • Anonymous

I like how this boss is bullshit difficult until you manage to get to the stairs without being instantly bodyblocked so you can easily kill the dogs one by one.
Once the dogs are dead this boss is an extremely easy 1v1, shitty camera+arena aside, 6 or so unique attacks which are all extremely telegraphed and a relatively low health bar makes this **** an absolute joke on his own.
It's really obvious that they knew he was too easy and instead of doing anything to the capra demon himself that would actually make him hard they put him in a tiny arena with two dogs so you'd get easily bodyblocked/stunlocked to death.
Why do these early-game DS1 bosses suck so ****ing much? Especially in comparison to later games, these guys are lame and are really easy unless fromsoft gives them some retarded advantage lmao
He is truly deserving of the nickname; "The Crapra Demon"

FYI you should have a +5 weapon before this boss, in fact you should probably have a +5 before gargoyles. Just make sure you’re able to oneshot the dogs or else things get messy fast.

This boss does show the games technical shortcomings I’m afraid. Not being able to roll 360 and that camera makes this as much about luck than anything.

                      • Anonymous

Capra isn't a boss. This "room" is. I managed to run upstairs YET the balcony was too narrow to use my mace (hitting a wall instead), camera went crazy AND even after the dogs were gone I still saw a dungpie because all of this wasn't enough, creators had to put this goddamn tree there to minimize my view even more. Bravo, you evils.

                        • Anonymous

The tank strat #2 is definitely the easiest, I'd say. You can take the dogs out quick without their attacks breaking your stance, and then the demon itself is a piece of cake with super easy, telegrammed attacks.

grab the elite knight set and Artorias’ ring before you fight this boss. The 86 poise really makes this boss a cakewalk.

This boss had so much wasted potential in my opinion, he has one of the sickest designs in all the trilogy, yet, his dogs just make the fight annoyingly hard, and when you're done with them, he goes down without much effort. I've played a mod called "Age of sunlight" recently, and they reworked the boss fight, and it was much more cool, i'd recommend yall to check the fight out on youtube if possible.

literally not difficult. just run up the stairs 5head. when they follow you up the stairs jump off and repeat.

now the runback, THAT's cancer. died ten times more to those assassins and their dogs than i ever did to capra and his

This boss is unironically brilliant. Hear me out. You go in the fog gate expecting either a new area or an arena style boss fight. Asylum Demon, Taurus Demon, Bell Gargoyles, and maybe Moonlight Butterfly are the only bosses most new players fight before and all have a slow "introduction" before the fight begins.

Capra Demon? No. You fight in the criminal-filled Lower Undead Burg. And when you think about it, why should you expect a fair fight there?

This fight is like getting jumped in an alley, it's a cheap and unfair move in stark contrast to all the fights before and sets a new tone that puts you on edge before you enter the Depths and Blighttown.

i didn't understand the strat. I went in and got immediately attacked and thought it was a dog, so i killed it in two hits and it was THE capra demon.

Did this again today. Took 5 tries, and I swear the first 4 deaths were due to camera malfunction. I think the camera might actually have gotten worse for this fight in the remastered version.

I happened to be using the +5 claymore for this fight and beat it on first try, only afterwards did I realize how tiny the arena is you are stuck in.

Idr if it was Claymore +4 or +5 but it did the trick for me. The range of the heavy attack meant I didn't have to aim that much at the dogs and one shot them. Rest is history.

Get drake word and two tap the dogs with shield block, I killed the dogs at the door when the Demon is still walking over, the rest is still hard but manageable because he hits very hard for an early game boss

What a garbage ass boss fight design. Jesus Christ. You get attacked and stun locked the moment you walk into that closet sized arena. I’m coming over from Elden ring and have been having a blast with dark souls so far until I came upon this ****. Really tested my goddamn patience lol. I hope whoever thought this was a good idea stubs their toe everyday for a damn week.

Overall, Baphomet and Cerberus are a painfully designed boss. 10/10 would like to be backstabbed again before entering the boss room.

The strategy that works best for me is to immediately run up the stairs after I enter the fog, turn and swing at a dog, drop off the side of the stairs and run back up them at all costs. Rinse and repeat until the doggos are dead and do the same for the big boy

Love this game, but this is the skidmark on its undies. You get thrown into a room where the main enemy isn't the Capra Demon, it's not even those ****ing dogs, it's the camera that zooms in so far that you can't see where you are or what you are doing. Dropped in an automatically cornered and blinded.

Either you use the ‘shortcut’ to Firelink Shrine that makes the run longer so you can face less enemies, or you have to face like 5 thieves and 5 dogs in a super cramped space which makes it hard to swing a sword before you even to the demon. It’s a brilliant setup for the 2 dogs and fast demon in a cramped space. I can beat this boss reliably but god he makes using the master key so tempting.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

2.DONT USE HEAVY WEAPON WHEN DOGS ARE STILL THERE!
3.there are some weapons I suggest:
                                                                        Halberd,zweihander,black knight sword,claymore,astora straight sword,drake sword
                                                                        4.use charcoal pine resin
Just don't forget using grass crest shield to recover stamina faster
And upgrade your weapon and armor by farming souls and buying titanite from andre for reinforcement

                                                                        • Anonymous

Buying charcoal pine resin at the female undead merchant, in order to buff my weapon before entering the fog, for one shotting the godamn dogs. Then throwing my 5 black firebombs that were left in my inventory on the boss while keeping my distance. Finally for its last HPs buffing my weapon again and bonking it a few time. Ooooh those 3 steps saved me a lot of frustrating tries.

                                                                          • Anonymous

I got the key to lower UB but completely forgot, the moment i came back to this area my weapons have already became too OP. I one shotted all the dogs and easily killed the carpa demon. So yea, suck to be yall lol

                                                                            • Anonymous

I came up with a strat but it just takes a little to set up. You need Stone Armor, Havel’s ring, cloranthy shield and Divine or magic weapon or Black knight weapon. Wolf ring optional. The fight becomes cake and his attacks are easy to tank, the dogs are a minor nuisance.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Then get the Zwelinder and spam RMB on the dude. Go up the stairs and let him follow you. Then Rmb him and jum off the stairs and let him follow you. Do this yntil he is dead.

                                                                                • Anonymous

I think of it as the final exam of the tutorialisation phase of Dark Souls - making sure you understand most of the mechanics and viable strategies that the game has introduced or you have found out by yourself (cheeese) - all under HIGH PRESSURE

                                                                                  • 10/10 would recommend this boss to anyone that need their sphincter stretched and brutalized. I think felt more violated here than in a threesome with male gorillas... Gud luck sun-bros!

1.music : the music is just meh for this guy

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

With enough poise the dogs can't stunlock you and the fight turns quite easy.

So you can either wear heavy armor or get the Wof Ring from the forest which should give you enough poise even with light armor.

Run up the stairs, kill the dogs (which now cannot interrupt your attacks so it should be easy). Capra demon by himself is not that hard. If you need a breather run to the top of the stairs. He will follow you but it takes him long enough for you to heal up.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I just cobabbed the dogs while hitting the demon so I didn't even see them, and just dodged his attacks, pretty disappointing. But it took me sister three days to beat (Grass caressed shield and Uchigatana)

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

I always dodged to the left after entering the fight but as it turns out dodging to the right (like the strategy on this page suggests) seems to be guaranteed success. I say this because I’ve done it the last 3 playthroughs and made it up the stairs to kill the dogs each time without being hit.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Just word of advice to anyone who needs it: Right after entering fog wall, dodge backwards as the Demon jump attacks you to avoid the damage and roll with an attack straight away. This is usually enough for me to catch the first dog in my swing and kill him.

Then you can either fight the Demon near the fog gate entrance where the 2nd dog don't aggro onto you, or you can bypass the demon during on of his slower attacks and go kill the 2nd dog, making the fight far less stressful.

I realize this advice is likely not massively universal to every playstyle, but it has really helped me out so I hope its worth sharing.

P.S I often wear elite knight armor and carry a medium shield with a greatsword. I have medium roll, and sometimes prefer to equip the Wolf Ring found in the Darkroot Garden.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Hit him a few times with the Gravelord Sword and he was dead before the second dog could even join the action. Felt good to slaughter him like when he slaughtered me on my first playthrough months ago.

I highly recommend wearing the stone armor set even if it puts you past 50% equipment load. The poise and defense is worth the slow movement. Don't worry he'll come to you... he'll come to you.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous
