Some say just hit the light button to see the negative LCD screen. That’s stupid. You want me to press a light button during the day just to read my watch?! Furthermore there’s this time when it’s too dark to read the LCD and it’s too light for the illumination to offer any help.
I wear a watch to tell the time, day of week, and date. This negative LCD display prevents me from easily doing that. MINUS ONE STAR.
Ok let me tell you watch I love about this watch: IT FITS!
I have 8 1/2” wrist and most GShocks are too small. (Casio: you need to manufacture extended size replacement wrist bands.) This one fits well because the band is big and the watch body is large. As a consequence it stands proud about 11/16” off my wrist. But hey, at least I can get it around my wrist.
I wear the GXW-56BB on the third notch and it fits great. The extra strap fits snuggly in the plastic keeper. The clasp is metal and the tang has a double prong that keeps the band from pivoting.
Next aspect of this watch: MUD RESIST. Wow. I love it. It’s like they took a regular square GShock and stuck it in an OtterBox. The buttons are impervious to fluids, grease, and grime. I work in the oilfield so this watch is subject to brine water, hydraulic oil, oil based mud, paraffin, diesel, and salsa from my breakfast burrito. The GXW-56BB doesn’t miss a beat.
Now DURABILITY: The band is attached to the watch with SCREWS. Yea! No more pins popping off while you’re doing something. Do you know how many watches I’ve lost just from pins popping off unbeknownst? (Several)
So it’s a good work watch because it’s so durable yet that extra protection makes it look like you strapped a hockey puck to your wrist. But it’s not heavy. So overall I like it. 4 Stars.

This watch is using what is commonly referred to as having a negative display. One thing to consider is with negative displays on these types of watches the lighting conditions must be sort of strong, and at the proper angle to easily see the display. Otherwise the back light can be used. Negative displays are often called a, "private display". If you search in this watch category there is another version of this watch that has a positive type display that is black fonts on a light yellow background. This watch is actually a high visibility display. I now have both types.
Being solar powered there are no issues with often using the back light and or the alarms. As long as there is light shining on this watch it will keep charged. When not being worn it is a good habit to leave the watch in a place where the light from a window can shine on the watch. You can also charge it under a desk light. You can buy solar watch chargers for solar watches that can be powered from a USB port. Bright white LED lighting indoors seems to be the the most efficient ambient type light for charging solar cells. When outdoors sunlight is the best possible lighting you can have.
Make sure there is no excessive heat. Never leave this type of watch in the car or in a hot place. Excessive heat is not good for the watch electronics and the battery. The battery in these types of watches is actually a high Farad gold leaf capacitor device.
A nice plus about this watch is it is all back and does not strongly stand out. Many people including myself like this type of watch.
Setting this watch type and using the features is very much the same as with most of the other models of Casio G-Shock watches and many of the other brand types. Very easy logistics and simple to use. It is like once you know how to use one of these digital watches, you will know how to use this one.
I found this watch very comfortable to wear. It is light on the wrist, and the silicon type band is easy to adjust. The buttons are easy to access, but being a heavy duty type watch the buttons are a bit tough to push.
As for time keeping I did some precise measurements. I found the one I received will keep time to about +5 seconds per month. This reading is with no user or radio frequency time correction. I have a fair number of the G-Shock watches. With no time correction they are all keeping within about +3 to about +8 seconds per month. This is excellent. When wearing the watch the time keeping will be more stable since quartz watches are a bit sensitive to temperature changes. But, we are talking the difference of a number of seconds over a period of a month.
With watches that have auto time correction from receiving the radio frequency time standard it is obvious the watch will always be within 0.2 to about 0.8 seconds on any day compared to the transmitted UTC international time standard. This small delay has to do with any signal delay, and any particular delay of how the watch's internal uPC handles the particular setting. For the average person or even someone navigating a boat or aircraft this is considered absolutely accurate.
I like this watch very much. It is a terrific reliable time piece. I would recommend this watch for anyone who wants a very rugged digital shock resistant watch that can go through a lot of abuse.

NOTE:
I have both the Regulus and a fair number of different heavy duty type G-Shock watches.
I saw on the net in various discussion groups, and with some questions on various vendor sites there were many people asking about the Regulus military watch in comparison to the G-Shock digital watches.
The Regulus watch was originally designed for the US special forces and for NATO. It was released to the public about two years ago. The features are about the same as the G-Shock digital watches. The logistics of using the Regulus watch is a bit different, and it has two independent timers. There are some small differences with how the features work, but in the end they are functionally very much the same as with the G-Shock digital. I found with the Regulus even though it is rugged and strongly built it is not as shock resistant as the G-Shock. The front bezel is more prone to be scratched if the front part of the watch is struck against something hard. The sapphire crystal (glass) on the Regulus is not as receded as with the G-Shock and can be more easily damaged. The buttons are tough and rugged as like to be expected.
The Regulus is definitely a shock resistant watch, but not as extreme as the G-Shock. One thing different with the Regulus display is the fonts are about double the size of the G-Shock digital, and thus are more easy to see when in not under ideal lighting conditions. The Regulus appears to be a more dressy watch than the digital G-Shock but this a matter of personal preference.
The Regulus is not solar powered and is not able to be auto synced to any time standard. I found the Regulus a bit more difficult to precisely manually set the seconds. As for accuracy over a one month period it is in the same specifications class as the G-Shock. The one I have is keeping at a rate of about +3 seconds per month when worn.
For extreme shock resistance and water resistance the digital G-Shock is ahead of the Regulus. For ease of use between the two depends on personal preference, and how you are going to use the features. As for time keeping they are both excellent. As for the display the Regulus has larger fonts.
