Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1969 Canadian singer Anne Murray recorded "Bidin' My Time". When a US disc jockey flipped the record over the reverse side became Anne Murray's first Top Ten recording. Which song became her first US hit?

Answer: Snowbird

"Snowbird" made history when Anne became the first solo Canadian female artist to be awarded a Gold Record. "Snowbird" reached Number Ten on the US Country chart, Number Eight on the US Billboard chart and Number One on the US Adult Contemporary chart. Anne had released her first album on the Canadian Arc label, but switched to Capital Records for her second album, "This Way Is My Way". "Bidin' My Time" was initially selected as a single release with "Snowbird" as the "B" side.
A Canadian songwriter named Gene MacLellan composed the song and it has been covered by many artists including Elvis Presley. "Danny's Song" was released in 1972 and was also a Top Ten hit for Anne. "A Love Song" was released the following year and reached Number 12 in the US. Anne released her version of the Beatles' hit "You Won't See Me" in 1974.
2. "Substitute" was the name of a 1966 hit by The Who. It was also the title of a song by a disco diva. "I Will Survive" was the flip side of "Substitute" and became a disco anthem for which singer?

Answer: Gloria Gaynor

The Righteous Brothers had previously released "Substitute". Gloria Gaynor's label thought "Substitute" had more mainstream potential and released it as a single from Gaynor's "Love Tracks" album with "I Will Survive" as the "B" side. When radio stations started giving "I Will Survive" airplay, "Substitute" only made it to Number 107 on the Billboard chart, listed as "bubbling under". "I Will Survive" went on to be a 1979 Number One hit and in 1980 the song was awarded the only Grammy for Best Disco Recording. When Gloria recorded follow-up albums in 1980 and 1981 they were met with a cool reception because they were released at the height of the anti-disco movement.

Evelyn "Champagne" King is known for hits such as "Shame". "Ring My Bell" was a hit for Anita Ward in 1979 and Donna Summer had several disco-era hits including "MacArthur Park" and "Bad Girls".
3. In 1974 The Doobie brothers released "Another Park, Another Sunday" as a single with "Black Water" as the flip side. "Black Water" took off as the hit and reached Number One on the Billboard charts the following year. Which Doobie Brothers album contained these two songs?

Answer: What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits

"What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" was the fourth Doobie Brothers album. Patrick Simmons wrote and sang lead on "Black Water", the band's first Number One hit. During the recording of the album drummer Michael Hossack left the band because of the grueling touring schedule. He was replaced by Keith Knudsen. Ironically Hossack was later hired as the drummer for Bonaroo, a band that opened for the Doobie Brothers on a subsequent tour. Hossak and Knudsen both played on "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits". Guest artists who recorded tracks for the album include Arlo Guthrie, Skunk Baxter, James Booker and Andrew Love.

"Another Time, Another Place" was a 1974 Bryan Ferry solo album. "Another Time" was a 1974 compilation album by Earth, Wind & Fire. "On the Border" was a 1974 Eagles album.
4. In 1971 Rod Stewart released "Reason to Believe" as a single from his "Every Picture Tells A Story" album. The flip side started receiving airplay and Rod had his first US Number One album and Number One single simultaneously. Which song was Rod's first US Number One hit?

Answer: Maggie May

Rod Stewart and Martin Quittenton wrote "Maggie May". Although "Reason to Believe" was officially the "A" side, it only took two weeks for "Maggie May" to be given the classification. Rod admitted to being bewildered about the overwhelming success of the song. The musician who played the mandolin on the session was named Ray Jackson. Five years after the initial release the song was back on the UK charts but only reach Number 31. US Folk artist Tim Hardin composed "Reason to Believe". In 1999 Rod Stewart was treated for thyroid cancer and he had to learn how to sing again.

"You Wear It Well" was released the following year. "Sailing" was a Number one hit for Rod in 1975. "(I Know) I'm Losing You" was included on the 1973 "Sing It Again Rod" LP.
5. "Train to Nowhere" was an instrumental recorded by The Champs in 1958. The flip side became an enduring classic instrumental and a Number One US hit. What was the title of the song that was originally the "B" side?

Answer: Tequila

The Champs consisted of house musicians for the Challenge label, owned by Gene Autry. The band recorded tracks for Challenge artist Dave Dupree titled "Train to Nowhere", "Night Beat" and "All Night Rock". A fourth song was needed to complete two sides for each record and saxophone player Danny Flores composed "Tequila" and sang the title of the song three times during the recording. The song was done in three takes and put on the "B" side of "Train to Nowhere". "Train to Nowhere" went nowhere, but when a Cleveland disc jockey played "Tequila" the song shot up the charts, became a Number One US hit and earned a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Recording in 1959. Flores had to use the name Chuck Rio because he was under contract with another label.
"Sleepwalk" was recorded by Santo and Johnny in 1959, the same year Johnny and the Hurricanes recorded "Red River Rock". "Teen Beat" was a 1960
release by drummer Sandy Nelson.
6. "Surfer Joe" was recorded in 1962. The flip side was a hastily written and recorded instrumental titled "Wipe Out". The catchy drum beat placed the song at Number Two in the US while "Surfer Joe" peaked at Number 67. Which band originally recorded "Wipe Out"?

Answer: The Surfaris

Band members Pat Connolly, Bob Berryhill, Jim Fuller and Ron Wilson wrote "Wipe Out" during the session as a flip side for "Surfer Joe". The sound in the beginning of the song was meant to imitate a surfboard breaking. The band's manager, Dale Smallen, provided the laughing into and the drum beat was inspired by the cadence of drummer Ron Wilson's high school marching band.
"Switchblade" was originally considered as a title for the song. The Surfaris released another instrumental called "Point Panic" and disbanded in 1966 after releasing six albums. Members of the band have occasionally reunited to perform over the years.

The Chantays recorded a surf classic called "Pipeline". In 1963 "Surfin' Bird" became a Number Four hit for the Trashmen and the album "Surfbeat" by the Challengers was one of the biggest selling surf albums.
7. "Hung on You" was the "A" side of Righteous Brothers release in 1965. The duo recorded a cover tune for the flip side that went on to be a Number Four hit for them. The song saw a resurgence of popularity in 1990 when it was used in the film "Ghost". Which Righteous Brothers hit was originally the flip side of "Hung on You"?

Answer: Unchained Melody

Alex North and Hy Zaret composed "Unchained Melody" for a 1955 movie called "Unchained". Vocalist Todd Duncan recorded the song for the movie soundtrack and Harry Belafonte sang it during the 1956 Academy Awards. Les Baxter released an instrumental version that reached Number Two. Singer Al Hibbler then recorded a rendition that reached Number Four, followed by a few versions by other artists in the fifties.

The Righteous Brothers had enjoyed chart-topping success with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" and released follow-up hits such as "Ebb Tide" and "Just Once in My Life" while working with Phil Spector. "Unchained Melody" was sung by Bobby Hatfield and was one of their last releases before Spector sold their contract to Verve/MGM. "You're My) Soul and Inspiration" was a Number One hit for the pair after signing with the label.
8. Which 1972 Elvis Presley song was originally the "B" side of "Separate Ways" and was a Number One Country hit for Willie Nelson ten years later?

"Always on My Mind" reached Number 16 for Elvis in 1972 on the Country charts. Brenda Lee recorded a version the same year that only reached Number 45. Mark James, Johnny Christopher and Wayne Carson Thompson composed the song that was certified as a Gold Record when it was recorded by Elvis. The composers earned a Grammy when Willie Nelson's version topped the Country charts. Willie also won for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. The Pet Shop Boys performed a version of "Always on My Mind" in 1997 for an ITV television special honoring the tenth anniversary of Elvis' death.

"Burning Love" was a 1972 "A" side hit for Elvis. "The Wonder of You" and "Kentucky Rain" were recorded by Elvis in 1972. Ray Peterson originally recorded "The Wonder of You" in 1959.

It was originally the flip-side to a single release from the album titled "A Hazy Shade of Winter". The album also included "Homeward Bound", "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" and "Scarborough Fair/Canticle".

When they recorded a live version of the song in 1972 and placed it on the "B" side of "America" it overshadowed "America" on the charts. Brewer and Shipley are best known for their 1970 hit, "One Toke Over the Line". "American City Suite" was a Number 27 released in 1972 by Cashman & West. Sonny and Cher broke nationally with "I Got You Babe".
10. In 1959 a song called "Teardrops on Your Letter" was released by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. The flip side was a song Ballard composed titled "The Twist". Which artist released a version of "The Twist" the following year that kicked off the Twist craze?

Hank and his band released their first hit in 1954 titled "Work With Me Annie". "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go" and "Finger Popping Time" were follow-up Top Ten hits. After Chubby Checker's hit version put them back in the spotlight Hank Ballard and the Midnighters were in demand but broke up in the mid-sixties when Ballard attempted a solo career working with James Brown.

"Fannie Mae" was released by Buster Brown in 1960. In 1960 "My Girl Josephine" was one of many chart hits by Fats Domino. "Rockin' Little Angel" was a Top Twenty song by Ray Smith the same year.
