Tried researching this a bit and cant really find an answer. If i modded my 4-USB port PS3 with CFW (Not HEN), will it mess up the backwards compatibility in any way? I’m hoping to mod it so i can backup my games and put less load on the DVD drive to make it last longer. Thanks.

from what I understand, no, it shouldn't affect the backwards compatibility at all. I'm not the expert here though. just seems to make sense, the A01 and B01 models are completely hardware compatible with ps2 games, the E0 I believe has the PS2's cpu built into the mother board but uses software emulation for the gpu. Based on that I see no reason why cfw would stop it from being backwards compatible.
not to mention a lot of people with backwards compstible models do install cfw, and I figure people probably wouldn't be doing that if it took away the backwards compatibility yk?

That’s part of the reason I’m modding mine! I’m wanting to add the temperature monitor software onto it so i can keep an eye on it. I got super lucky with mine when i bought it. Smoke-free pet free home and seems to have only been used about 30 hours. Never been opened and close to no dust on the air intake.
I'm thinking of either adding cfw or a fan mod that allows me to run it at high speeds constantly in order to keep the temps down tbh
The E01 has the ps2 gpu not the cpu
So I did a lot of research on this a while back before I installed CFW on mine
The short answer is no it doesn’t remove the backwards compatibility it adds it… it is designed to add the PS2 compatibility to non BC units so when you CFW a BC unit it acts differently
If you run a PS2 game from a physical disk the console acts normally and uses the built in hardware BC. If you run a PS2 game from an ISO on the HDD it bypasses the hardware and will use the CFW built in emulator… which is less compatible than the hardware system…
i use webman on the CECHA to play the ratchet & clank games via my dumped isos and they still utilize the HW emulation. those games are NOTORIOUS when it comes to bc compatibility. :p
the CECHE has hybrid hardware+software emulation which means it has less compatibility than the CECHA/B. so youd be right to worry about compatibility on that model, but thats not the fault of the cfw. the CECHA/B is nearly flawless even if you use ISOs
so basically, modding a BC unit is 100% ok as it preserves the backwards compatibility, and even allows region free gaming! :) ive used multiple cechas and even a decha00a so ive had my share of experience.
It won't affect back compat, my CHECH A is fully modded and can still read PS2 game. But if you're gonna go ahead with it, you won't really need the disc drive for PS2 games anyways.
