Rezension aus Deutschland vom 4. Juli 2018

5,0 von 5 Sternen Thank You Neil, Thank You Rhino!
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 9. Juli 2018
Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds were the launch pad of Crosby Stills Nash with and without Young. You might notice I left out The Hollies. This was intentional as Hollies were a British Merseybeat group with a style that didn’t become truly Americanized until after Nash left the group to join Crosby and Stills. BS combined folk and a smidge of country into a pop-rock, psychedelic rock confection which like The Byrds was heavy on the “folk-rock” and helped to propel a distinctive sound into American music of the mid to late 60’s. Their single For What It’s Worth was so successful on the radio that 3 months after initial release, they re-pressed BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD with For What It’s Worth as the lead off track and dropped Baby Don’t Scold Me from the track list. This box set issues you the original Mono version as the original December 1966 release and the Stereo version as the March 1967 release so that you actually get both versions as they happened. You might also notice that Young’s song Burned is mono on both versions of the album as the song was never mixed for stereo. I originally owned BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD in the stereo LP (as well as the two other albums) and I remember it as not the greatest sounding record. Both it and BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD AGAIN were a bit muddy (not as bad as my Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, or Manassas, both of which I felt were fantastic LPs which suffered from not as good engineering as they should have received), at least my pressings were. In the case for this WHAT’S THAT SOUND 5 CD set, I can only rave about the remastering and engineering work that Neil Young has accomplished here. I don’t ever remember any of the three albums sounding this perfect, and loved them out of the gate, so now they sound heavenly. Richie was Neil’s best translator (vocalist) and Neil’s Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing, while enigmatic, is beautifully crafted and rich. Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It? Same thing, Young extraordinaire, Furay delivery spot on perfect. Stills’ Sit Down I Think I Love You works as a perfect duet piece with Steve and Richie. Just a little rough around the edges, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD is a monument to the budding psychedelic rock movement and a resounding hint at the paramount albums to come, both from this assembly and from the individual artists about to take center stage on the classic rock scene.

There is a lot of history both behind and in front of the Buffalo Springfield, so much so that this review could become a book if I went into it all for the newcomers, but leave it enough to say that super groups often are full of Type A personalities who together conspire to create great artistic accomplishments and at the same time they seethe with personality conflicts. Buffalo Springfield (and later CSNY) was one such of those super groups. Their sophomore LP, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD AGAIN, in my opinion is their pinnacle, the summit of their collective talents, containing the best compositions by Stills, Young, and Furay, and the best performances by all 5 men (as well as the engineering and production by the team). While their debut album was recorded quickly with only the formidable talents of the 5 members of the band, AGAIN had some credited and uncredited session support by A List personnel, it had some time (both forced and unforced) to evolve into a work of art, and the iconic personality conflicts actually assisted in the creation of terrific songs. Young’s 60’s anthem Mr. Soul, his amazing Expecting To Fly (with Jack Nitzsche), and his experimental-Brian Wilson/Lennon&McCartney-ish Broken Arrow are legendary. Stills astonishing Bluebird and his grappling Everydays are two masterpieces of psychedelic rock; and Richie Furay’s first songwriting surfaces here, especially his A Child’s Claim To Fame which pointed the way to his future work with Hillman and broke ground for the “California Country” sound of Poco and Eagles eras to come.

All good things must come to an end, and by the time LAST TIME AROUND hit the streets Buffalo Springfield as working group had disbanded. The cover of the album says it all with Neil Young facing backwards and each other member facing forward stone faced. Bruce Palmer played on only one track and was replaced by Jimmy Messina who also worked the engineering and production side. Messina was somewhat of a child prodigy on guitars and before joining Buffalo Springfield for their last outing he had recorded surf guitar music in a band named His Jesters at age 16. Of course he went on with Richie to form Poco and then became the instrumental genius half of Loggins & Messina, but for all intents and purposes Jim Messina was a valuable commodity in the creation of LAST TIME AROUND. The album is full of important tracks to all the individuals. CSN’s anthemic Carry On saw it’s beginnings here on Stills’ Questions which fully serves as the 2nd half of Carry On. One of Young’s greatest songs On The Way Home which he performed prodigiously with CSNY is at its most beautiful best here, sung by Richie; his immaculate I Am A Child finds him at his vocal best. Furay’s Kind Woman would carry him well into the Poco years where it was re-recorded and performed often. Stills had an affection for Caribbean and Calypso which would surface often enough on solo and Manassas projects; Pretty Girl Why and Uno Mundo demonstrate the germination of this. Even Messina contributed a noteworthy lazy porch song: Carefree Country Day that sits well among the tracks. One needs to bear in mind that this fine album, while sounding organic and made to order, was actually cobbled together by Furay and Messina by assembling already recorded tracks (from mid ’67 to early ’68), polishing them off with instrumental needs (in May of ’68), and finishing off the engineering and production for release (July ’68).

Young’s leadership in the remastering of this box from the original analog tapes demonstrates his respect and great love of the music they made in their short time together. The finished product, these 5 CD’s sound gorgeous, only way to describe them. Neil Young noted that it was only 18 months they recorded together, but “It was an important 18 months”. Thank you Neil. And thank you to Rhino who once again proved that they are the masters of remasters when it comes to classic rock and my generation’s music!
