The parents of students run the school as if it is an elitist organization only granting access to children of previous alumni. It creates a negative environment where making friends with everyone is very difficult unless your parents are friends to some extent. The academics are also not laid out super clear for high achieving students in addition to the special education services being sub-par. Also if students don't care the administration will not care and let them "slip through the cracks" only pushing them through graduation rather than actually helping them and addressing a problem.
Westside High School has a wide variety of classes you can take. We have Modular schedules, which prepares us for most colleges. We get lots of free time in a day to do work in between classes due to open mods. Lots of classes also offer Duel-Enrollment credits to further help you with your college experience.
My overall experience at Westside High School would be summed up with the idea that it depends on the day. Known for its sports programs, I felt like there was less assistance to the performing arts program (from the band and former show choir/choir student perspective). Regarding administration, the day and circumstance would determine how each experience would play out. I'd say my worst experience was the mistreatment by an elective course teacher, which was the final straw leading to me leaving the program. The best experience I'd say is the people I leaned on following that experience. I was red hot with tears and my counselor had calmed me down so well. Each counselor has their strengths in certain fields, my counselor was very positive about how ambitious or stubborn I could be at times and was as equally persistent as me. others very good for reflecting on your day or just talking to you. The only thing I'd change is increasing the seating and supplies in student spaces.
