Set in the heart of royal London, Wellington Arch was built as an original entrance to Buckingham Palace, later becoming a victory arch proclaiming Wellington's defeat of Napoleon. Crowned by the largest bronze sculpture in Europe, it depicts the Angel of Peace descending on the 'Quadriga' - or four-horsed chariot - of War. Central London gem
Visited here on 3rd august 2023 with family. The visit is very quick but you do get to climb to the top of the arch and have a great view. The staff are very friendly and helpful and as I am a member of English heritage we didn’t have to pay . It’s worth a visit just for the view .

Dominant Feature in the Corner
With an impressive array of memorials in Hyde Park Corner, Wellington’s Arch is the most dominant. Perhaps it over shadows the other memorials. The arch and the statue are impressive in their design. Wellington must have been one great leaders to be revered in such a way.

Well worth a visit
Visited today and were welcomed by Hannah and Phoebe who were an absolute joy, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic! Enjoyed the Samuel Bassett exhibition and the info about the history of the arch too. Lovely views from the top!

Good value at nearly £7?
It's a very impressive monument, with a striking statue on its top - but you don't have to pay to see the outside: that's free. You only have to pay to go in - and that's quite ordinary. Probably the best thing is the view and as it was raining heavily, during my visit, that wasn't as good as it could've been. I think you're basically paying £7 for the view, so I'd recommend that you only go there on a nice day.

Next we walked along Constitution Hill road and arrived at the Wellington Arch. Also known as Constitution Arch or (originally) Green Park Arch, it is triumphal arch that forms a centrepiece at the corners of Hyde Park and Green Park; as a large traffic island with crossings for pedestrian access. A bronze quadriga (an ancient four-horse chariot) sits on top of the arch.

a gem hidden in plain site

Free entry as members of English Heritage, the Arch contains three small exhibitions on one of the memorials nearby and the bronze above. the views from the deck above are great and the history of the site engaging. Well worth a visit especially around 10:30 each week day when the Household Cavalry pass through the Arch on their way to the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.

Surprise view from the top floor balcony

After visiting Apsley House we took a short walk across the road to the Wellington Arch. There are 2 balconies on the top floor with good views down The Mall & over to Park Lane. It does have a lift which is useful for those of us who have difficulties climbing a lot of stairs. Interesting historically and about 30 minutes is all you need for a visit.

Interesting, complements a trip to Apsley House nearby

I took my visiting family to this along with a visit to Apsley House, opposite. It's worth a visit if you're in the area. You have views over London from the balcony and at the moment there is an interesting art exhibition. There is also an exhibition on the Royal Artillery, of which complements their monument near the Arch. It's interesting to find out about the history of the Arch and how is has been modified and moved over the years.

Worth a visit as part of English Heritage membership if nearby

As Londoners my husband and I are keen to see/enjoy as many London attractions as possible and saw this one as part of our English Heritage membership so were keen to have a look. I've passed this monument many times but didn't realise you could go in it or up it. Without membership the visit is £7.50 for an adult which I feel would not have been worth it but with membership a good stop off. The viewing areas at the top are small but nice and the small museum areas on the way down interesting. There are stairs or a lift to the top. Our whole visit took under 20 minutes.

Unique monument

We took the chance of visiting the monument as we walked underneath. Truly a monument deserving of a prime minister and ultimately a general of the armed forces. The monument doesn’t take long to visit, worth while if your English heritage members. The view from the top can be impressive if the weather is with you. And as you look down watching the chaos of the traffic anticipating a traffic collision, don’t for get to look up as the horses look down straight at you.

Go inside Wellington Arch and onto the roof

You can go inside the arch for a small shop, art and exhibition from the war. You can then go up to the roof for great views across London. It is strange as you stand underneath the sculptured horses and realise just how very large they are.

Pompous triumphal arch

Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner was completed in 1830 as an original entrance to Buckingham Palace. Later it became a victory arch to commemorate Britain's victories in the Napoleonic Wars. On top of it is the largest bronze sculpture in Europe. It depicts the Angel of Peace descending on the four-horsed chariot.

Surprisingly interesting

We've been past the Wellington Arch many many times without even thinking of going in. But it's really interesting - you just go up one of the pillars (by stairs or lift) and there are small exhibitions at each level, and then you come out on top which gives excellent views out over Hyde Park, Green Park, Buckingham Palace area, in fact generally over central London. We even had the horseguards go through the arch while we were looking down from the top. Really good value for an hour or so.
