The guitar and songs are what it's about though. This is a great musical life story told by Steve's guitar playing progression of his career. All of the tune's are either alternate verions, or live performances from a 50+ year career.
The quality of these vintage recordings sound great, I'm on disc 3 and getting excited about firing up the DVD.
I first saw SMB at the Grande Ballroom in early 1968 during the tour for the Children of the Future album right when it first came out. He lost me for a while when Fly like an Eagle became the overplayed song of the next couple of years, but with the remasters I've learned to appreciate the albums of that period.
The Les Paul duet "I Wanna be Loved" is a favorite (I'm glad it is on both CD3 and the DVD)..Don't get me wrong, the whole set is a real treat and well worth the coin.
Time to go,
Adios fellow retro lovers
The caper of this box set is the DVD disc, with material stretching from 1967 (Monterey, unseen for decades) until excerpts from a recent Austin City Limits. The crown jewel of the DVD and the entire box set is the Don Kirschner Rock Concert. I saw a small portion when broadcast. This seems to be the entire thing, almost an entire hour with no songs cut and only a few annoying cutaways to the audience dancing to other songs. It immediately reminded me of how impressed I had been back in the day. This is great stuff and a deep dive into his archives.
Highly recommended and I hope more sets emerge.
BUT I opened my shrink wrapped set and the first page of the David Fricke essay was torn in half and the the half was missing!! Bit if a drag on a $70+ item.
It seems as though these box sets are always missing something. If I had to pick one thing that seems missing from this one, it would be the inclusion of all the final studio takes used for all the hits. Some are included, but others are just alternate takes. I believe these sets should include everything to really make them "complete".
Other than that, I am overjoyed we finally have this set!
My only criticism is how cheaply the CDs are made in the box set, which is now produced overseas. One would think that cheaply made CDs is the last thing a struggling record industry would want to do to customers still buying physical media.
