Weird Loners: Will You Keep the Fox Comedy Company on Tuesday Nights?
Look no further than the title of Fox‘s Weird Loners to learn exactly what the freshman comedy is about.
The basic premise: Four disparate thirtysomethings, living in New York City, struggle to forge long-lasting romantic relationships because they’re, well, weird.
Before the series premiere really dives into each of its titular outsiders, it would be easy to think, “Aw, those guys are just misunderstood!” But as the episode continues, we soon realize that, no, these people are a little crazy and also sort of terrible.
Let’s break down the quartet:
* Caryn Goldfarb (Ugly Betty‘s Becki Newton), dental hygienist: Despite being engaged to a kind and well-meaning (if a little clingy) guy, Caryn’s first appearance on the show is on a singles’ cruise, where she’s trying — and failing, miserably — to meet someone new.
* Stosh Lewandoski (Happy Endings‘ Zachary Knighton), VP of sales: Gifted though he may be when it comes to his job, Stosh gets fired for sleeping with his boss’s fiancée — after slipping her some ecstasy.
* Zara Sandhu (newcomer Meera Rohit Kumbhani), artist: She starts her day by moving out of her apartment and breaking her live-in boyfriend’s heart… and she wasn’t even going to tell him about it!
* Eric Lewandoski (Hello Ladies‘ Nate Torrence), tollbooth attendant: The most kind-hearted of the bunch (and also Stosh’s cousin), Eric is just a bit socially awkward, having lived with his parents since graduating college.
Through a series of unfortunate events, the foursome eventually gathers at Caryn’s apartment, where the engagement dinner she attempted to cook for fiancee Howard is ruined by a) burnt food and b) her inability to resist Stosh’s seductive ways. (Seriously, this guy has got to start going after women who are actually single.)
After realizing she wants a more exciting relationship than Howard can offer, Caryn calls off the engagement — rather nonchalantly, might I add — before heading to the park with her newfound friends, where they crash a happy couple’s wedding and remind us that misery indeed loves company.

I give Weird Loners an F. Looks like Becki Newton is on the verge of having yet another failed TV series.
I recently saw the trailer for the show she had been due to lead the “I’m a Virgin” one. That would have been cancelled too if she hadn’t gotten nocked up.
The title of the show is enough to give it an F. I wish I could have that half hour of my life back…
I loved it. Surprised so many people didn’t, but then I tend to fall for the shows that get canceled soon after.
Sigh. This TV season is making me miss Happy Endings more than usual. I really did not like this at all, which made me upset to see Zach here instead of H.E. And Eliza’s show got cancelled. I can’t seem to get into Elisha’s new show. I kinda like Marry Me, but it’s not great, and definitely not H.E. Every time I watch, I just wish Casey were Penny again. Add Damon leaving New Girl and Adam leaving The Mindy Project (which I was upset about). I mean, really. With the inevitable failure of this show, Eliza’s show, the unlikely renewal of Casey’s show and Elisha’s show, and Damon and Adam leaving the shows they were regulars on, it’s like this TV season is simply saying they all still belong on Happy Endings together. I know, I know wishful thinking and beating a dead horse. But that show was just so great.
I agree with everything. I did like Eliza’s show, but I can’t get into the other ones, even though I like the casts. I haven’t watched this one yet, but I’m sure it will make me miss Happy Endings, too.
Agreed- I like Benched but not surprising she was by far my favorite on Happy Endings. I didn’t like Marry Me that much so even Casey couldn’t save that. I don’t mind Elisha’s new show but don’t want to get attached because it will just leave. There was no reason Happy Endings shouldn’t of made it other than people didn’t give it a try.
It was surprisingly LOL funny at times – hope it gets a chance to develop.
I definitely thought this was a mixed bag, but I had a few laugh out loud moments, so I think I’ll give it at least one more week. I thought Zara was the best character by far.
The REAL question is: Which is worse, this or One Big Happy?
One Big Happy, but only by a nose (One Big Happy was unwatchable, this was merely forced). Do yourself a favor and watch iZombie on CW. I know it sounds like a crazy idea but it’s sort of hilarious. I’m not the type of person who watches shows about zombies, but this one is by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’m actually laughing thinking about it, and considering I only started watching it because I knew I’d need something to fill the vast Mindy Project-less wasteland, that is pretty good. Also, since it’s on CW, which has low standards for ratings, it’s probably the most likely of the three to be back next year.
It was alright. I think the “New Girl” lead-in was probably a good idea. While I’m not immediately obsessed, it did have me laughing a couple times (e.g. the voiceovers as they watched the wedding at the end), and I really like the cast, so I’d give it another shot…
Always great to see Knighton and Newton on screen, these two had good chemistry and both deserve a great vehicle for their talents. The show is a mixed bag, but has potential to get better, solely based on the hilarious lip-reading wedding scene. I laughed out loud on that one. Melamite, by the power invested in me by Jim Carrey, you may now fist your pride?
I gave it a C+. The voice over during the wedding ceremony was pretty funny. It’s promising.
It dragged thru the first half, but the second was fun. I’ll see how it goes.
The scene with the wedding lip sync actually made me laugh out loud. Of course it was only one minute in the last few of the show…so that’s probably not a good sign.
I did not see much advertisement for this one, so regardless of the quality (or lack thereof), I would be really surprised if it did well enough in the ratings to keep it going. I am going to wait and see if it is doing okay before I watch it.

I think a lot of sitcoms have that problem. Too many that I loved have been canceled way too soon- Better off Ted, Happy Endings, The Class and Trophy Wive in particular. The first couple of years I was really worried HIMYM wasn’t going to make it and I loved it from day one. Last year my new favorite comdey The Goldbergs was a little iffy through the first part of the year but managed to hang on. There I think the problem was having it on Tuesday and now that it is in-between the Middle and Modern Family people who didn’t watch it last year will be.
I didn’t watch it because I don’t want it to do well, and replace The Mindy Project. I’m still hoping Mindy gets renewed.
I’m not usually a comedy person but was so surprised to find “laugh out loud” scenes that were truly funny & AND I loved the cast. I thought the wedding scene was so excellent I had to rewind it again!! Thanks Fox.
