Though adapted from a memoir by a British journalist, We Bought a Zoo feels entirely like a Cameron Crowe film, with clear parallels to previous crowd-pleasers like Jerry Maguire. Crowe introduces Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon in a role that recalls his Contagion character) six months after the death of his wife. Since everything reminds him of her, the California columnist decides to make a change, starting with a new location. His realtor (Curb Your Enthusiasm's J.B. Smoove), brother (Sideways' Thomas Haden Church), and sullen teenage son (Colin Ford) try to talk him out of it, but Mee falls in love with a country manor that comes with a strange stipulation: the tenant must manage the zoo that accompanies the property. With his daughter's blessing, Mee takes the plunge. Fortunately, he inherits an experienced staff, including MacCready (Angus MacFadyen), Robin (Patrick Fugit), Lily (Elle Fanning), and Kelly (Scarlett Johansson, lovely as ever in her least glamorous role to date). Mee's road to reinvention offers few surprises, but Damon makes him a sympathetic figure who finds the same kind of support system among the park personnel that Fugit's Almost Famous writer found in the rock world, except Mee's relationships have more staying power. If his detractors--a skeptical employee and an unctuous inspector--feel like screenwriter constructs, Zoo represents a return to form for Crowe after a series of missteps, including Elizabethtown. In a very atypical role, Matt Damon plays Benjamin Mee, a hurt and vulnerable widower with two kids. To try and bring stability to a fractured family—adrift without wife and mother—Mee purchases a rural property complete with large wild animals, exotic poisonous snakes, eclectic caretakers and a somewhat supportive community. Based on a true story—a true story set in England, not California—the tale follows relationships among major and supporting characters, including key performances by a grisly bear and an aging lion. Human-on-human relationships avoid the typical Hollywood gimmicks of prurient sex, senseless violence and swish-boom-bang super powers. The story… well… the story is worth your time. Some professional reviewers may think otherwise, but what do they really know about the stories, lives and possibilities of everyday people? Damon fits surprisingly nicely into a more gentle role. You may need some time to disassociate Damon from earlies roles some say he was Bourne to play. Enjoy the flick.

Qu'est-ce que ça fait du bien !!

Je ne peux qu'être d'accord avec Victor, voilà un film qui fait un bien fou ! Enfin, passé les quelques moments dramatiques qui viendraient bien vous arracher une larmouillette, passé ces moments-là, comme dirait l'autre, c'est que du bonheur !

Basé sur la véritable histoire de Benjamin Mee (qui apparait d'ailleurs à la fin du film avec toute sa famille en tant que figurant !), cette histoire d'un jeune veuf qui se retrouve avec ses 2 jeunes enfants à la tête d'un zoo nous tient en haleine du début à la fin.

Un film qui donne la pêche, sans rien dévoiler, vous aurez compris qu'on n'est pas là pour coller le spectateur sous Prozac après le film ! Et l'objectif est atteint ! Emporté par un casting de haut vol, au 1er rang desquels un Matt Damon très à l'aise, une Scarlett Johansson un peu moins mais toujours aussi charmante, et une Maggie Elizabeth Jones (la fille !) tout simplement incroyable, à 7 ans, la petite est une pièce essentielle du film ! Le reste du casting est également excellent, on citera notamment les interprètes de Peter McCready, Walter Ferris ou le frère Duncan Mee, qui apportent tous une touche supplémentaire d'humour bien senti !

Je ne serais évidemment pas complet si je ne citais pas les animaux, qui apportent une réelle dimension juvénile au film, après tout, qui n'aime pas aller au Zoo !!

A la réalisation, l'excellent Cameron Crowe (qui a d'ailleurs également participé à l'écriture du film), à qui l'on doit déjà des comédies romantiques succulentes telles que Jerry Maguire ou Rencontres à Elizabethtown . Il ne faillit pas, sa réalisation est dynamique et ne nous donne aucun temps mort malgré un film de près de 2 heures, l'utilisation des animaux est excellente.

Côté technique du BR :

L'image : comme à son habitude, la Fox nous offre un transfert MPEG-4 AVC de toute beauté, dans un ratio 1.85 (toute chtite bande noire), l'image est d'un naturel saisissant, aucune trace de correction artificielle de type réducteur de bruit, la faute à la qualité des caméras utilisées certainement ! Les images filmées ne demandaient aucune action supplémentaire, et le résultat est superbe, notamment dans le rendu des couleurs. Le tournage a eu lieu en Californie, là où l'action se déroule, on a donc droit pour les scènes d'extérieur à cette touche de jaune naturellement présente dans les paysages locaux, c'est magnifique.
Les détails (visages, vêtements, animaux, etc.) sont excellents, le contraste et les niveaux de noir sont également de très bonne facture.

Le son : personnellement, j'adore ce mixage extrêmement dynamique. Evidemment, il ne s'agit pas là d'un film d'action, mais Cameron Crowe réussi tout de même à nous proposer un mix immersif, tout spécialement dans les scènes d'extérieur, où les bruits du vent, de la pluie ou le plus souvent des animaux, nous donnent l'impression d'être assis au milieu du Zoo ! C'est super, et la musique, toujours excellente, fait également partie de ce mixage qui utilise le meilleur de cette VO DTS HD MA 5.1. Hélas, mille fois hélas, n'est pas METROPOLITAN qui veut, et une fois de plus, nous voilà en présence d'une VF non HD, qui nous propose certes un honorable DTS 5.1, mais on est loin de la VO HD... c'est quand même (encore !) dommage !

En conclusion, un film pétri de bons sentiments, un film qui fait du bien tout simplement ! A la réalisation de qualité, au jeu d'acteurs (humains et animaux !) impeccable, et proposant une image et un son d'excellente facture, voilà un savoureux moment de cinéma à apprécier en famille ! Je ne peux que vivement vous le recommander !

What I liked about this movie was a widowed father of 2 desperately wanted a new start. His daughter was excited to live in a new home even with the new friends being animals that came with the house. Could you imagine buying a house to find out overnight your a zookeeper too. Such a great movie to watch with your family.
