What is a bear hunt?

It's a classic children’s book, written in 1989 by Michael Rosen, and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. It’s a wonderful book about adventure and overcoming obstacles- a timeless classic for young children. The plot goes a little like this…

Four children, their baby sister and their dog go for a walk. They encounter long grass, thick mud, heavy snow, a cold river and a forest, before they arrive at a huge cave with a bear inside. Horrified, the family run home through all of the obstacles that they encountered on their way, but this time, with the bear following. Luckily, the children get home in time to lock the bear out, and the bear leaves them alone. The children get under their duvet and talk about their next bear hunt. Use our range of Bear Hunt activities to help your children develop their reading skills. Fun fact: in 2014, it won a Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest Reading Lesson’, as 1,500 children attended, with 30,000 listeners online.
