Wayne Bridge believes he is more famous for refusing to shake John Terry's hand than he is for his career with Chelsea, Manchester City and England.

The 36-year-old, who hung up his boots in 2014 after a spell with Reading, won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge.

But Bridge admits that the controversial incident with Terry, which occurred before a game in February 2010, is what he is best remembered for.

In the build-up to the game between Chelsea and Manchester City, it was revealed that Terry had an affair with Bridge's ex-girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel.

Bridge and Terry were team-mates at Chelsea between 2003 and 2009, and also played together for England until the former Southampton left back decided to quit international duty in the wake of the allegations.

'The most disappointing aspect of it all is that I'm probably more famous for not shaking someone's hand than I am for playing football,' Bridge told The Sun.

'I get abuse walking down the street now and I let it go in one ear and out the other. It's a handshake after all, nothing more.'

Bridge helped City emerge victorious on the day, as two goals each from Carlos Tevez and Craig Bellamy earned the visitors a 4-2 win against Carlo Ancelotti's side.

And Bridge, who also represented Fulham, West Ham, Sunderland and Brighton during his 16-year career, was thrilled with the reaction of his team-mates.

'It's so hard for me to talk about the scenario because there would be other stuff to divulge,' he added.

'But what I will say is that I could not believe the atmosphere at the game that day and the reaction of my team-mates, in the build up to the match and during.

'I still don't think anyone knows the full story but my team-mates that day were amazing. I felt like my team-mates wanted to win, for me.'
