CD Review: Water From The Wells Of Home - Johnny Cash

Over the years Paul McCartney along with the other Beatles have made numerous appearances on other artists albums and if you're a completist like myself then the purchase of these albums can make it a very expensive hobby!

I wouldn't have thought that Glen Campbell, Johnny, June & John Cash Carter, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams Jnr and Waylon Jennings were musical bedmates of Paul McCartney but that's what happened in 1988 when they all appeared on the same Johnny Cash album 'Water from the Wells of Home' released on Mercury Records.

The album also featured the Everly Brothers but of course they would prove to be the exception.

''New Moon Over Jamaica' the penultimate track on the ten song album is a pleasant acoustic based ditty co-written by Tom T Hall, Johnny Cash & Paul McCartney.

The track was recorded during Paul's Flowers in the Dirt sessions, i.e. after recording demo sessions with Elvis Costello and before recording demos including Motor of Love and We Got Married in his home recording studios.

.'Talk about playing safe, 'New Moon Over Jamaica' features new Paul McCartney band members Chris Whitten (Drums), Hamish Stuart (Guitar) and Linda on vocals, while Geoff Emerick was in place as engineer.

If you're a fan of Johnny Cash you'll no doubt enjoy this album but if you're a Paul McCartney completist and not that keen on Johnny Cash & the country music genre then you're probably better off looking for a bootleg compilation of Paul's appearances on other artists albums.

Believe me it will be cheaper!

I purchased this 42 track album   at Beatleweek 2023,  although it was released in 2019. It was a big decision as I've bought numerous releases of Hot Hits, Cold Cuts and other 'unofficial albums' featuring the likes of Lulu, Tony Bennett and Steve Martin but the premise of purchasing this release' was 'It'll be nice to have them all on this 2CD Ultra Rare Tracks set.' So what do I get for my £22? Well the boast on the back of the CD advises there's '42 tracks or mixes that have never appeared on any McCartney album' is slightly out of date. A number of the songs have surfaced on Paul McCartney releases since 2019. For instance 'Same Time Next Year' as the  B-side to  Put it There  and 'My Carnival' as the B-Side to  Spies Like Us but there's still a wealth of unreleased songs across it's two sides Side two begins with a rollicking version of Girl School, taken from the songs Acetate.  One off releases of songs include

HI HI HI OR AI

Paul McCartney - All By Myself (Eric Carmen AI Cover) Over the last few weeks a number of  Beatles & solo related videos have been uploaded to You Tube. Nothing new there I hear you say but these are uploads that have used AI technology to change musical history. Like a kid in a toy shop I've been ploughing through a number of uploads, enjoying and cringing at their various degrees of sucess and failiure. The first two AI videos I encountered made a big impression on me. Mainly because the changes to the songs were minimal but totally effective. They are Paul McCartney's 'New' and John's incredible Grow Old With Me which at this moment in time has had 84,000 views in 5 days, most probably  from me! They must be doing something right. Other highlights include the wonderful I Don't Know from Egypt Station, subtle changes but again totally effective. The highlights for me are Paul McCartney's Billy Joel AI versions She's Always a Woman To Me and My Life
