Born in Lewisham, South London on 31 Aug 1872. Father of actresses Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine. Graduated from Cambridge University, married Lillian Augusta Ruse, and moved to Japan to study patent law there. Both daughters were born in Japan.

De Havilland developed an obsession with the Japanese game of Go and also found he enjoyed the geisha girls. Both disagreed with Lillian's ideas on what marriage should be and they separated in 1919. Divorce wasn't finalized until 1925. Lillian then married department store owner George Fontaine; this is where Joan took her stage name to differ from sister Olivia.

Walter married twice more. He retired to British Columbia and died in May of 1968 of age related causes.
