I like this release and its smoothed-over rough edges. Maybe it comes down to what you are used to? I heard this before Cry of Love, etc. and listened to it a lot. Years later after obtaining many other releases of the same material, I find myself coming back to this one. While the recent (2015?) remasters of CoL, etc. have their moments, I find this to be arguably the best summary of what was still in the vaults vs. the three releases in the early 70's. Yeah the drums were re-recorded on a couple of tracks but I think this is arguably the best version of RFoM and I consider Stepping Stone a bit of a throwaway anyways.

Attempt by Alan Douglas to reconstruct last album by Jimi Hendrix. Main material was pervoiusly published on the albums "Cry of Love", "War Heroes", "Crash Landing". Alan Douglas was much critisized for overdubbing and remixing original records (here last overdubbs of drums were made in 1995), but I can't do anything with myself - I like it. This CD sounds much better, intelligent and impressive than later releases of Jimi's unfinished records by The Hendrix Experience label.
Approach by The Hendrix Experience is clear and simple - let's release Jimi's records as they are preserved with original rough unpolished sound.
Question is: would Jimi himself release his songs and solos in this rough form?
        I doubt it.
Approach by Alan Douglas is more questionable and in the same time more reasonable - let's release the record according to high standards, let's reconstruct Jimmi's ideas and clear studio sound. The final result in this case is much more impressive and listenable.
You could compare this album with CD "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" with nearly the same material released a year later under supervision of Jimi's relatives and make your own choice.
        My choice is obvious.
