VMI Community Updates

Institute leadership continues to communicate important information for cadets, their families, faculty & staff, and the VMI community at-large:

  • VMI will implement summer hours beginning Friday, May 24 and ending Thursday, Aug. 15. The Institute will be open Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Visitors to VMI's museums are encouraged to visit each museum's website for specific hours and tour availability.
  • Find gifts for grads, family, and friends, including end of season clearance items up to 50% off, at the VMI bookstore.
  • The May 2024 Institute Report is now available. The latest edition of the Institute Report is now available on vmi.edu. Stories include a look at notable retirees, spring FTX, the latest theatre production, and a visit from Gov. Glenn Youngkin to post.
  • VMI baseball will close out the home season May 16, 17, and 18 against Western Carolina at Lamore Field. 

  VMI Community: To receive important information concerning emergencies, weather, traffic, and parking, text the word "Keydet" to 772-95.


Recently graduated cadets at the Virginia Military Institute toss their gloves in a traditional celebration of the end of their cadetship during VMI's commencement ceremony.

Congratulations VMI Class of 2024!

Closing out graduation week ceremonies, and the spring semester on post, 1st Class cadets walked across the stage in Cameron Hall to the cheers of their brother rats, faculty, staff, family and friends as they collected their diplomas, becoming graduates of the Institute, and joining the proud ranks of VMI alumni. Rah Virginia Mil! Rah '24!

The late G. Gilmer “Gil” Minor III ’63, was awarded posthumously, the New Market Medal, Virginia Military Institute’s highest honor, during the annual Memorial Parade on post May 15.

VMI Commissions New Officers - Over 170 Take Oath

It was an overcast day, but spirits were bright and hearts were full when more than 170 Virginia Military Institute cadets commissioned into the armed services in Cameron Hall, May 15 in the annual Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) joint commissioning ceremony.

Celebrating Excellence at the Institute

Each May, numerous awards recognizing the accomplishments of cadets, faculty, and staff across multiple fields and disciplines are presented at VMI's Institute Awards ceremony. These awards are provide by VMI, by civic groups, and by the Institute's ROTC units. 

Cadets Create Apps for Hiking Trails

For the past academic year, 12 VMI electrical and computer engineering majors have worked on their senior capstone projects with three external partners to develop a better way to document and assess hiking trails and share information about their navigability.
