Virginia Military Institute has served me more than I ever imagines it would. When I first found out I was going to attend a military college I bawled my eyes out so hard I could barely breathe. I was terrified of a culture that was so foreign to me. I showed up as a blank slate and decided I was going to trust the process. In the two years I have attended this college I have been painted with new motivation and drive that I had never truly tapped into. The idea of trying something new and terrifying does not paralyze me anymore, it entices me. I wish to not just expand my capabilities, but to expand the capabilities of everyone beside me as well. I feel as though I have been given the tools to bring up myself and the people who are willing to trust me as well.
VMI is a valuable experience, but it sucks. I've convinced myself the poor decision making in leadership which ignores cadet needs and morale is just to make us more resilient and give us examples of how NOT to lead. It has taught me to be efficient with limited time because of extracurricular requirements, to operate on very little sleep, and to prioritize what things need to get done immediately versus later and with how much effort. I am an English major and the English department is just outstanding. They are caring and intelligent and sincerely want the best for the cadets. This is absolutely not the case for all majors though. Some don't care about cadet wellbeing at all and actively try to thin out the number of people in the majors.
VMI changed me from a boy to a man. It was 100% worth the experience, and 4 years of my life. The lessons you learn at the Institute will make you a better person (personally and professionally). Rather than going to a state school or a big university where your diploma just blends in with the other 15,000 classmates graduating in the same year as you; at VMI your diploma will mean something. Not everyone can do it. And that diploma will mean much more knowing that you join a line of alumni that are of the highest quality. Might not be an Ivy League, but the quality of alumni punch far above its weight. In terms of earning potential, career projection, and network opportunities.
