Official | Vincent Le Goff announces surprise retirement

Vincent Le Goff (34) has announced his immediate retirement. The defender had featured on nine occasions for FC Lorient this season.

On Tuesday, Lorient revealed that Le Goff has chosen to retire from football with immediate effect. The decision had been expected, with the left-back mulling over his future in recent days. The decision does, however, come as a surprise given that the Frenchman had started eight games for Les Merlus this season. He wasn’t a key member of Régis Le Bris’ side, but nor was he peripheral.

Over the course of his career, Le Goff played for Stade Lavallois, Le Poiré-sur-Vie and Istres, as well as Lorient. The left-back played a total of 199 matches in Ligue 1, scoring four goals. He also played 142 matches in Ligue 2, scoring eight times, whilst also featuring 322 times for Lorient. He is the club’s second-most capped player, after Fabien Audard, who featured 352 times for Les Merlus.

The motivation behind Le Goff’s decision to retire mid-season has not been revealed, although L’Équipe understands that personal reasons came into consideration.
