I was reading about the palace and seeing its photos since March, and when I visited in April, it just took my breath away. I love the fact that when you enter the palace, you literally go back through time. It’s just missing the imperial family to be around.

I enjoyed the ride through gardens, seeing the house where empress Maria Theresa’s doctor stayed, the oldest zoo in Europe (I believe), the fountains.

It just has its own magic. For those who love luxury, nature and history, you get it all there.

Our visit to the Historic Center of Vienna was a captivating journey through centuries of rich history, architectural splendor, and cultural heritage. From grand palaces to charming cobblestone streets, every corner of this UNESCO World Heritage site offered a glimpse into Vienna's illustrious past, making it an unforgettable experience for our family.

We began our exploration at the iconic Hofburg Palace, the former imperial residence of the Habsburg dynasty. Stepping into its opulent halls and lavish chambers, we were transported back to the grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, marveling at the intricate details of the architecture and the treasures housed within its walls.

Next, we strolled along the elegant Ringstrasse, admiring the magnificent buildings that line this historic boulevard. From the neo-Gothic splendor of the Rathaus (City Hall) to the majestic Vienna State Opera, each structure told a story of Vienna's cultural richness and architectural diversity.

As we wandered through the narrow lanes of the Inner Stadt (Inner City), we were charmed by the quaint cafes, bustling market squares, and hidden courtyards that punctuated the cityscape. The sound of horse-drawn carriages clattering over cobblestones added to the timeless atmosphere, evoking a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era.

One of the highlights of our visit was exploring St. Stephen's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that has stood as a symbol of Vienna for over 700 years. Climbing to the top of its towering spire, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the city, offering a breathtaking perspective of Vienna's beauty and grandeur.

Throughout our journey, we were struck by the sense of history that permeates every corner of the Historic Center. From the medieval alleyways of the Judenplatz to the Baroque splendor of the Belvedere Palace, Vienna's rich tapestry of architecture and culture captivated our imaginations and left us in awe of its enduring legacy.

As we bid farewell to the Historic Center of Vienna, we carried with us memories of a truly unforgettable experience shared with family. Our journey through this storied city had deepened our appreciation for its heritage and left us longing to return, eager to uncover more of its hidden treasures and timeless wonders.

Belvedere Palace complex was another beautiful museum that we enjoyed visiting. Smaller to Schonbrunn but elegant in every sphere of architecture, the building housed so much of paintings of historical value that were well conserved. Museum housed a large collection of sculpture and some rooms were decorated with soothing wall and ceiling paintings that could take the viewer to a fantasy world. The baroque garden occupying a vast area, was in large terraces, reaching the lower level at the beautiful water feature followed by the tiered water cascade. Garden sculptures of sphinx was magnificent.

We had previously visited the interior of this magnificent cathedral, which has certain areas that you can explore for free, but noticed an entry doorway around the side where you can take a small lift up, approximately 60 metres, to two viewing platforms that run around the side of the North Tower.

The North Tower is known as the Adler Tower and is smaller than the South Tower which can only be accessed by 343 steps, there being no lift. Construction on the North Tower began in 1450 and took approximately 130 years.

The view from the North Tower over Vienna is very extensive but, I understand, is not as good as that from the South Tower as the panorama on the North Tower is blocked by the multi-coloured mosaic tiled roof that replaced the original Gothic roof that was destroyed by fire at the end of WWII.

Cost of entry was EUR6-00 per person paid in cash at a counter at the entrance to the lift. The lift only held about six people plus the lift operator

Whilst there is protective wire around most of the two platforms, there is one reasonably narrow stairway which joins the two platforms and appears to go around the area that holds the bell, that may present issues to people with acrophobia.

The gardens at Schonbrun are beautiful, and there are many spots tucked away that you can go to spread a blanket and picnic awhile.

Stroll the rose gardens, go by the zoo, see the grand palace - if you choose to go there earlier in the mornings, you’ll avoid the crowds - especially as the weather heads towards lovely summer!
