Joan Armatrading hat viele gute Songs geschrieben und auf dieser Platte sind nur gute.
Unaufgeregt aber dynamisch, unsentimental aber gefühlvoll. Ich habe diese Platte (früher tatsächlich als Platte und jetzt eben als CD oder mp3) bestimmt schon 100 mal gehört und sie wird nicht langweilig sondern eher besser. Das ist ein untrügliches Zeichen für glatte fünf Sterne.

This review is for the reissue I received from Intervention Records of Joan Armatrading. This was one of my favourite records in the 70's and I even had it on analog tape. It was already a fantastic recording and I think this reissue is up there with the best - if you like Joan Armatrading and analog recordings, you are in for a treat!!! Very nice gatefold, although a bit pricey - but worth the investment IMO :)

Classic Armatrading; her best album

I've been a fan of the UK's Joan Armatrading since her first album ("Whatever's For Us") was released. This album, her third released in 1976, was the classic, though, and contained two of her biggest hits ("Down to Zero" and "Love an Affection"), one of which (the latter) remains on my all-time-favorite-songs list. Pete Clarke's deep "Oh Give Me Love" on the latter's chorus remains one of my all-time favorite bits in a song.

This is not a significant remastering, unfortunately, as comparing the LP and earlier CD versions to this one shows. In fact, I found parts (such as the "Oh Give Me Love" low bass part on "Love and Emotion" which seems to almost disappear in the mix) to be worse on the remastered version. Even so, the CD is worth buying simply for the quality of the album and Armatrading's vocals. Without doubt, one of the classic albums, and Armatrading's best release.

Ce disque est paru en 1976. Peut-être la pire année en matière de qualité musicale. Des dinosaures incapables de sortir des galettes dignes de leur talent passé (Stones, Who, Dylan, Clapton, Purple, Led Zep, ...) et des horreurs progressives (Genesis) au sommet des charts. La misère totale.
Et bien, même dans un tel contexte pas grand monde n'a remarqué le 33 T de cette jeune black sortie d'une île des Antilles. Pourtant la seule pochette aurait dû attirer l'attention. On y voyait Joan Armatrading fière, altière, limite arrogante, regarder à côté de l'objectif. Exactement la même attitude que Marvin Gaye sur son « What's going on », un des plus grands disques de tous les temps, tous genres confondus.
Ce « Joan Armatrading » est son premier « vrai » disque (elle a plus ou moins renié les deux précédents). Mélange parfaitement dosé de folk, blues, funk, pop, rock, un soupçon de reggae, quelques ballades crépusculaires, d'autres titres plus enlevés .... Le tout enregistré avec des musiciens de studio reconnus (dont quelques uns du groupe folk anglais Fairport Convention).
Des réussites comme « Down to Zero », « Love and Affection », « Join the Boys », « People » auraient logiquement du lui valoir la reconnaissance du public. Malheureusement, dans le milieu de la musique, le seul talent n'est pas obligatoirement synonyme de succès, et Joan Armatrading avait le triple handicap d'être femme, noire et pas spécialement sexy (les choses sur ce plan n'ont guère évolué depuis).
Joan Armatrading est un chaînon essentiel entre Joan Baez et Tracy Chapman (qui lui a pratiquement tout piqué).
Disque et artiste à (re)découvrir.
