Product description

4-CD box set

Amazon.com

The pundits claim that Ol' Blue Eyes did his best work with Columbia in the '50s, but there's more great '60s and '70s stuff here than you can shake a stick at. After all, Sinatra wouldn't start his own label only to sing schlock. This four-CD set was released to celebrate The Chairman's 75th birthday and it traces the mellowing of that tremendous voice like the aging of a fine wine. It also adds eight unreleased tracks to a staggering song list highlighted by biggies like "New York, New York," "My Way," "The Way You Look Tonight," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "The Song Is You." --Michael Ruby

When I got this four cd boxed set nearly 10 years ago, I was pretty heavily into Sinatra and already owned the excellent "The Capitol Years" boxed set, but I always leaned slightly towards the Reprise years, since those were the first Sinatra recordings I've ever heard.

"The Reprise Collection contains the best work from Sinatra at Reprise Records, the record company he started in 1962 and made a lot of his best work at. This four cd collection is the best representation of his career released. Sinatra was always like fine wine, getting better with age, and here, in his autumn years, was never finer.

Here is where you'll find a lot of Sinatra's best songs. Indeed, songs like "Fly Me To The Moon", "Strangers In The Night", "The Summer Wind", "Somethin' Stupid", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "My Way" and "(Theme From) New York, New York" rank among Sinatra's best and most popular works. Of course, there are a number of underrated gems here that really deserve to be heard, especially the stuff on the latter half of the third disc. And I would also like to reply to the reviews to say his voice was not in top form on the fourth disc. Well, Sinatra was much older at this point, plus he smoked, so it was only fitting that his voice changed. However, it worked in his favor. A lot of the songs Sinatra sing in this period, like "There Used To Be A Ballpark", "Send In The Clowns", "The Gal That Got Away/It Never Entered My Mind" and "Here's To The Band", were meant to be sung from an older person's perspective, and Sinatra performed them perfectly. So it ends here.

My only complaint is that some great songs were omitted. For example, Frank's undisputed best album from Reprise, "September Of My Years", is barely represented. The three tracks included are indeed worthy, but to leave off the title track as well as" Hello Young Lovers" and "Last Night When We Were Young" is a crime.

Also, while they may not quite be as good as their Reprise versions, Frank's Reprise redoings of "(Love Is) The Tender Trap", "Learnin' The Blues", "(How Little It Matters) How Little We Know", I've Got You Under My Skin", "Young At Heart", "Witchcraft", "Come Fly With Me", "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" and "All The Way" are all worthy of inclusion, while Frank's 1961 Tommy Dorsey tribute album, "I Remember Tommy" does not get represented at all.

On top of all that, great songs like "The Girl From Ipanema", "The Very Thought Of You", "The Girl Next Door", "You Will Be My Music", and Frank's final studio recording, "My Foolish Heart", missed the cut. Had I been in charge of putting this set together, I would've omitted filler songs like "The Coffee Song" and "What Are You Doing For The Rest Of Your Life", the five live tracks from "Sinatra At The Sands" and a good chunk of disc three save maybe the hits and a few other tracks to make room for more worthy tracks.

Other than that, I have no complaints.

The booklet is flawlessy put together. Very informative with some great photos. This boxed is an absolute must for all Sinatra fans or anyone with any taste in music whatsoever.

The only thing I didn't like about this, the definitive Sinatra reprise collection, is that Mr. Sinatra sings better than I do, as he does just about everyone else - packaged better and more attractively than any collection I have ever received, packed with loads of biography with pictures accompanying. Reprise apparently offered the best recording opportunities and direction, and some of the songs, sung in Mr. Sinatra's inimitable style, will break your. heart. One particularly evocative song, especially, given the coronavirus, and aptly entitled, is "There Used To Be A Ball Park." by Joe Raposo, begins the fourth disc. No one but Sinatra could sing it, as so many of his other classics..

What can be said that hasn’t been said already? It’s Frank!!! Great songs from the Reprise years, one of my favorite parts of Sinatra’s career!!!

my 76 year old aunt who was dying from cancer was a big sinatra
fan, and liked listening to Frank when in bed at night, and later, as her disease progressed, throughout the day.

since I only had 2 Sinatra CD's for her to listen to, this collection was a blessing in disguise, as it allowed me to switch cd's rather than her having to listen to the same songs hour after hour.

I was very pleased, as the shipment was prompt, and both quality and price were a blessing.

thank you for making a very ill lady happy in her final days.

Finally under his own label, Reprise, Sinatra is putting out the music that he wants to do without push back from executives. And it shows in the execution. It is Frank at his best...

While there are certainly a few iconic songs in this collection associated first and foremost with Frank Sinatra ("I've Got You Under My Skin," "Fly Me To The Moon," etc.), there are quite a few that rank as second-rate Sinatra (not that that's awful). In contrast to the three-disc Capitol set there's a greater proportion of the unfamiliar and (forgive me) the schmaltzy in this box. The voice is in great form, and the arrangements are top quality, but the material just isn't at the top-tier level it was in the Capitol years. Ask any die-hard fan to name the best albums Sinatra ever recorded and you're going to hear about "In the Wee Small Hours," "Only the Lonely," "Songs for Swingin' Lovers," and perhaps "A Swingin' Affair," all of which were on Capitol. Reprise didn't have Nelson Riddle, and somehow the recording quality on that label was inferior to Capitol's as well.

Frank Sinatra was around for many years and had a number of discrete phases to his career.

The Capitol years were one fantastic period, and the Reprise years marked a renewed take both on the original music, but also on newer material that had come on the scene.

Sinatra was of course older at the Reprise stage, but I like the extra edge that age brought to his voice. Clarity of vocals, quality of orchestration, were, as always, spot-on in Sinatra material.

This set is pure joy.
