by Kirk Fox

Venetia Stevenson was an actress who starred in films in the 1950s and 1960s including “Darby’s Rangers.”

1950s Hollywood Starlet

Venetia Stevenson was the daughter of Robert Stevenson, director of “Mary Poppins,” and actress Anna Lee, known for playing Lila Quartermaine on the soap “General Hospital.” As a teenager, she was spotted by a photographer in Malibu and became a model who appeared on the cover of many magazines. Still a teenager, she was signed to Warner Brothers Studios and appeared on the TV series “Sugarfoot” and “77 Sunset Strip.” In 1957, she won a “most photogenic girl in the world” contest held by the magazine ‘Popular Photography.’ She starred in the films “Darby’s Rangers,” “Island of Lost Women,” and “Horror Hotel” with Christopher Lee. Stevenson was briefly married to actor Russ Tamblyn, romantically linked to Elvis Presley, and formerly married to musician Don Everly. She retired from acting in the early 1960s.

Notable Quote

“I started getting recognized after my pictures started coming out in magazines.” “It was a strange feeling. Somebody would run up to you and say, ‘Can I have your autograph?’ I’d want to say, ‘Why would you want my autograph? I haven’t done anything.’” – She said in an outtake from the documentary “Tab Hunter Confidential”
