Making beer since 1888, the historic West End Brewery/ Matt Brewing is doing a lot right after our great recent visit. The 1888 taproom is classic with a beautiful bar and you can buy 6pks/12pks/cases of Utica Club and Saranac beers right there by the entrance. The outside grounds are inviting with a restaurant, outdoor bar, tables, umbrellas and large open area for games like corn hole and darts all with the attractive old brewery as a backdrop. They were even having a bridal shower when we were there. Located in what is called the brewery district, the outside area had an attractive tall wrought iron fence around it.
We started with a flight liking the Blueberry Blonde, one of my wife's favorites, the Matt's Special and loving the Utica Club that is just an excellent American Lager. They had a pretty good little menu, and we had the nachos with pulled pork that were very good and piled high. The lively atmosphere on our Saturday visit was fantastic and we look forward to a 2nd trip when in the area again. They have a tremendous beer lineup and fortunately we can get some of them in our market, but unfortunately not Utica Club. I love the Utica Club sign on top of the brewery.
They also have a stage for concerts/events and was surprised to see that on August 18 they were having a concert with Collective Soul.

It's a small zoo, but quite sweet and while the enclosures aren't exactly world-class they animals do have some good enrichment and mostly have a decent amount of space. Quite a surprising range of animals considering the size and location. Also fairly inexpensive. Worth a visit!

Such a local favorite venue with some awesome off Broadway shows. Love how the theater brings you back in time and is very well restored. It does get really crowded at the entrance on show days though so be aware of that. They have excellent staff and the staff is always friendly and helpful with ticketing questions and at the shows.

Nice place. Very good food (appetizers) and excellent beer and wine. There is a whole lot more to this place than I will review because my friends go there every year for this big get together. I can only speak for the part I was privy to. The flatbread pizza was excellent. You place your food and beverage order at the counter, you pay at the counter as well. They have high top tables that are actually big slabs (well finished) of trees. Good parking. THE RESTROOMS ARE CLEAN! I would like to try this in the summer.

Went to this church in Utica for Palm Sunday. My parents were married there in the 30’s. My husband said it was the most beautiful church he has ever seen.

Decided to take a two hour drive on a drizzly, snow-flecked Saturday, and picked out Utica as within range. This art museum is sell worth the trip. The Phillip Johnson space provides a restful, clean setting to look at great pictures (and sculptures), and this place has plenty, including the four mammoth Thomas Cole Voyage of Life paintings, other Hudson River School paintings, and a lot of very solid 20th century art, together with some newer stuff. We also waked through to the attached gilded age house, which as some more art and displays a great restoration of victorian decoration. There is a cafe in the house (the Terrace Cafe) where we had coffee and some great snacks. Must be lovely when the doors open to the terrace for outdoor dining in the summer. Icing on the cake was a contemporary section in the house itself, where a teacher at the arts college, Helmie Helmlow, had an exhibition of her engaging ceramic work.

We were there for a hockey tournament. The rinks were very well maintained. The restaurant and bar was fast and efficient. The rink seating was the best I've ever been in at a hockey rink. I was the first hockey game that I wasn't freezing in. Overall a fabulous weekend

I’m sure the owners of this distillery would rather you buy their product than take a tour but good news. You can do both!

We visited with a friend who lives nearby and had won a tour of the distillery! Although we arrived on a day they weren’t giving tours, they were very generous to give us a tour on a day they were making their product!

K and I have previously toured the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky and recently spent a couple of days in Lynchburg touring the Jack Daniels Distillery, I have to say I haven’t stopped commenting on how great our tour was yesterday! As I sit here sipping an Adirondack Distillery Gin and Tonic (delicious) I want to brag about how great and informative our tour was!

Having seen large scale distilleries, it was pure joy to see how a small craft distillery barely five years old was meeting the challenges of distilling spirits to meet the demand as people discovered their delicious products but also were working hard to create the next great spirit. Nick, our “tour” guide but actually a key member of the creative team, and Jordan, a senior member of the team, who kibitzed during our tour, were both incredibly informative. To be able to observe the entire process from mash to fermentation to distilling to barreling to bottling in roughly a room and a half was really fun and allowed us to compare our knowledge gained on previous tours of multiple buildings creating thousands of bottles to a small craft distillery facing the same challenges of taste, quality and consistency. Fascinating!

I’m sure their regular tour is as informative and ours plus there’s a tasting at the end. We left with a delicious bottle of gin and a bottle of their 601 Special series bourbon aged in maple infused barrels. A truly special tasting bourbon.

There’s something poetic? about creating spirits in a former church building that also had a life as a bank! this is one of those don’t miss places. You’ll leave much smarter than when you entered and have an opportunity to taste some of your new knowledge!

Don’t miss taking this distillery up on their tour!

Visited as part of time in West Utica. Interesting pictures and Boilermaker Race memorabilia. They also have a teen focused community garden next door. Combine this with lunch in West Utica at places like The Sanctuary, Lukins, Tramontane Cafe or Celtic Harp and go for a tour of the West End Utica Club Brewery for beer or root beer. There's some unique shops, don't miss the Sweets. If you're looking for a full day, also go to the Munson Williams Proctor Art Museum and call for a tour of the Stanley Theatre. Stop in and check out the Hotel Utica architecture and have a drink. West Utica is also home to a new Bargain Grocer store, an independent social enterprise business that employs underserved residents and uses its profits to support its other poverty reduction projects.

As with most local theaters the shows change, so check the web site before going.
Shows vary a good bit during the season, from well known shows to local spotlight shows of 'new' writers. The volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly. The seating is limited and there is no bad seat. It is accessible and snacks are available. Parking is limited and on the street, so it is best to arrive early.
