Diego Alonso, who became Uruguay coach in 2021 after 15 years of Oscar Tabarez' stewardship, has named his squad for Qatar 2022™. Having won the tournament in 1930 and 1950, it has been a long time since the South American nation last ruled world football.

However, a mini renaissance has formed over the past 12 years, and the five players who remain in Uruguay's squad from those tournaments will be out to secure their place in history.

Fernando Muslera, Diego Godin, Martin Caceres, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez will all appear at their fourth World Cup, although half of Alonso's squad will be making their World Cup debut in Qatar. Breakthrough stars such as Real Madrid's Federico Valverde and Liverpool's Darwin Nunez will be looking to add youth and hunger to veteran experience.

There are also places for familiar names Jose Maria Gimenez, Lucas Torreira and Rodrigo Bentancur. Both Cavani and Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo made the cut despite concerns over injury.

Uruguay commence their campaign in Group H when they face Korea Republic on 24 November, before playing Portugal and Ghana.
